Sparrow Bakery

The famous Ocean Roll and cappuccino

Sparrow Bakery is one of Bend’s hot spots for breakfast and baked goods. Sparrow showcases items ranging from artisan breads to elaborate pastries and pies, but the shining star is their signature Ocean Roll. A flaky, delectable sweet roll with a cardamom sugar filling, you cannot go wrong ordering one of these. You haven’t been to Bend if you haven’t had an Ocean Roll! Sparrow also features a roster of local coffee roasters on espresso and serves up a mean cappuccino which complements any one of their pastries quite well. Their menu consists of soups, sandwiches, and other daily specials. The Scott Street location is the original Sparrow location and has been open since 2006. You can now find Sparrow at their second location in Northwest Crossing, which is a great option since Scott Street’s itty-bitty space can sometimes be overflowing with ravenous customers on the weekends. The outdoor seating area has propane heaters and sits on a lovely brick patio. Be sure to hop next-door to the Workhouse to be wowed by the local crafters and makers who have set up shop in this workshop/gallery space.

Parrilla Grill

Parrilla has the grungy, no-frills feel of a local dive-bar but with astounding value and fresh, flavorful food. Parrilla Grill has been open since 2000 and has become a go-to for college students and people hitting the slopes at Mt. Bachelor. Expect a line, come hungry (and thirsty! $1 PBR’s all day every day). The wraps and bowls that are served up here can be customized to your particular palate and dietary needs, with protein options from tofu to beef to salmon. Gluten free? Ask for your burrito to come in a bowl instead! Each wrap comes standard with recommended salsas and sauces, although if you have a particular aversion they can leave it off with no problem. Parrilla is known for Uncle Wedgie’s Margarita, and although it comes in a plastic cup, don’t let it fool you, the booze is strong with this one. Seven different rotating taps feature many of the local breweries of Bend, as well as two rotating kombucha taps. An imaginative kids’ menu keeps everyone in the family happy.

Wild Rose Thai

Wild Rose is a family owned and operated northern Thai restaurant. The ambience alone is worth the trip. The decor inside is a bit bohemian with dried flowers hanging from the ceilings and tables filling the entire space. While you might have to put your name on a waiting list to get in, the food is totally worth the wait and comes out with mindblowing speed. The menu is crafted from decades of family recipes with the addition of the Chef’s own signature spins on traditional northern Thai cuisine. No Pad Thai here! Be sure to take a seat at the bar and check out their imaginative cocktail list.

Jackson’s Corner

If local, sustainably sourced food is your game, then Jackson’s Corner has you covered. They believe in consciously sourcing the ingredients for their menu items. The original location on the westside of Bend boasts a wood-fired oven where they pump out delicious pizzas on their house-made dough. Just around the corner from the restaurant you can stop in to the production bread-baking facility and take a gander at the beautiful loaves that Jackson’s bakes fresh every day. Their menu changes seasonally with the available ingredients, but you can always find a range of wood-fired pizzas, sandwiches, salads, and pasta dishes using fresh, house-made pasta. Jackson’s commitment to locally sourced ingredients is reflected in the pride with which each dish is plated and served. Spork

The winner of several “Best Of” categories from the local Source Weekly newspaper as well as being written up in the New York Times, Spork is not to be missed. From humble beginnings in an Airstream trailer converted into a food kitchen, Spork’s brick and mortar location on the westside is busy, and for good reason. Spork’s menu is designed by chef and owner Jeff Hunt and is globally inspired from many traditions across the world. With Mexican pozole to Peruvian lomo saltado, Thai green curry and Korean barbecue, the menu options abound. Spork also boasts daily specials, a slew of house cocktails, and of course draft beer. Spork offers takeout options and catering services.

Sifting Through The Types

Believe it or not, there are many types of belt buckles on the market today. The differences between these types can be so subtle that we miss them altogether.

Sadly, we won’t be going over all of those types here. We will, though, cover a few so you can get some idea of how different types of belts can affect your selection process.

Traditional

Traditional belt buckles are typically (well, behind frame-style buckles) what we think of when we think of buckles. They’re not too fancy, and they’re practical choices when you want something simple.

Because of their simplicity, they’re great choices for men who mean business. As an added bonus, they’re usually found in brass, nickel, or silver. This means that you have some room for customization without sacrificing too much utility.

Frame-Style

You’d think that traditional belt buckles were the OG buckles, but that title goes to frame-style buckles. Yep. That’s right. Buckles of the frame-style nature have the oldest design.

Well, at the least the oldest known one.

Like traditional buckles, they’re easy to use. As a matter of fact, they’re somewhat similar to traditional buckles in appearance. While the differences are subtle, they can be significant enough to impact a style.

Box-Out

Box-out buckles aren’t worn for being super functional. In fact, they’re much more decorative than functional.

So why’d we bother putting it on this short list?

Because they complement some styles nicely. Sure, they’re not the best belt buckles for men who mean business, but they’re fashionable.

…And Styles

As if the types of belts weren’t enough, they also come in a variety of styles. We don’t want to go too into detail about the styles, but we’ll briefly discuss a couple of them.

The first style that we’d like to give a nod to is the old cowboy buckle. It’s arguably one of the more iconic belt styles, and its variations can really be the cherry on top of an outfit with a western theme.

Superhero buckles are another style that we feel the need to pay homage to. While they’re all play and no work, they can make you feel like a superhero any day of the week.

Consider Compatibility with the Belt

Enough of the types and styles, though. We’d like to move on to something slightly less entertaining and more practical: compatibility with your belt.

Simply put, a belt buckle must match a belt. As a matter of fact, we’d go so far as to say that the best belt buckles for men should enhance the belt itself.These enhancements start with the superficial details.

Does the buckle look good with the belt? Does it clash with the material? Is it too big or small?

The size of the buckle is especially important here. It can greatly affect how your belt fits. Some styles of buckles, for instance, actually add sizes to belts.

Which means that a belt which fits perfectly will suddenly NOT fit so well.

Luckily, there is a surefire way to make sure that your buckle is compatible with the belt. You just have to try the belt on with the buckle.

The buckle can also tell you something about the belt itself. If your buckle pinches your pants’ lips, for instance, your belt might be too small.

Materials and Durability

Belt buckles are often made of one of two materials: plastic or metal. Though you can find nice belt buckles for men that are made of either or, the two materials have different benefits.

Let’s start with plastic. It’s amazingly cheap, so a buckle that’s made out of the stuff won’t cost you an arm and a leg. The problem here is that they don’t last as long.

And why would you expect them to? The benefit was that they were cheap – not that they were durable.

Metal buckles, on the other hand, are incredibly durable. Of course, they’re almost more expensive than plastic buckles, which is completely understandable.

Not all metal buckles, however, are created equal. Some buckles, for example, are made of metals such as gold or silver. We don’t have to tell you how expensive these buckles can get.

The only thing to watch out for here is the weight of the buckle. Large metal buckles can really add weight to your belt, which can feel strange at first.

Ease of Use

Do you remember when we discussed some of the types of belts on the market not too long ago? We did that for a reason: We wanted to show you that the utility of the different styles varies greatly.

If you recall, we discussed a style (the box-out buckle) which had little to no utility for those who are looking for something practical. It was purely for style.

Now does that sound like a belt that would be easy to use?

We’re not suggesting that you shouldn’t choose a buckle for fashion. We are, however, suggesting that you think about the occasion on which you’d be the belt buckle before you choose it.

Going to a party? Sure, flaunt your box-out buckle or large western buckle. Going to the office? How about a traditional or frame-style buckle? Seems more reasonable.

Central Oregon is well known for its outdoor recreation. From waterfalls to canyons, desert landscapes to lush forests, Central Oregon has it all. It would be remiss to start any discussion about day hikes in central Oregon without mentioning Smith Rock State Park. Check out our article dedicated to the park here for ideas on planning your hiking expedition. If you’re looking for something a little more off-the-beaten-path and less populous, we’ve curated a few sweet spots for you here. The following are several day hikes in the Central Oregon area that get you outside quickly without a lot of drive time.

Tumalo Falls

Tumalo Falls State Park is a wildly popular destination less than 15 miles outside of Bend in the Deschutes National Forest. The day use area and parking are just steps from the most picturesque view available of the falls. A short jaunt uphill to an overlook point is a mere 1/2-mile down and back to the parking lot. Here you’ll be able to stand at the top of the falls and imagine what it would be like to float right over the edge. For an even closer look, keep your eye open for a trail shooting off toward the falls. You can walk right up to the falls and feel the spray of the mighty river. This area can be very slick and wet, so make sure you’re wearing the proper footwear for the occasion. If you’re interested in seeing even more waterfalls along Tumalo Creek, keep heading up past the overlook along North Fork Trail. You’ll make your way past Double Falls, ending at Upper Falls, with serene viewpoints of both. This is a great point to turn back for a total of 4 miles of hiking with moderate elevation gain. This area does require a recreation pass, which is available to purchase online before you head out. You can also pick up or print a map of the Tumalo Trail System to help guide your travels.

Steelhead Falls

Steelhead Falls is located near the community of Crooked River Ranch. Long a hidden spot known mostly to locals, there are now signs guiding you to the trailhead. Heading north on highway 97, take a left on Lower Bridge way and follow signs to Crooked River Ranch. You’ll take a left on Chinook Drive and then another left on Badger. Travel another mile, and take a right on Quail Road which you will follow to River Road. River Road is a gravel road that takes you down to the parking area for Steelhead Falls. The trailhead can be seen just north of the parking lot. This hike leads you through juniper stands down into the Deschutes Canyon. You will pass by impressive geologic beauty on both sides of the trail. There are many trails down to the rocky shore of the river and some that extend up to take a closer look at the colorful canyon walls. The Deschutes Canyon is home to rich history and is marked with petroglyphs, if you can find them!

Steelhead Falls is very popular with daredevils who enjoy cliff diving and jumping off at the falls. There are plenty of places to stop along the river for a swim, and in the summer this hike is absolute perfection for cooling off during the blazing heat. Occasionally people will set up highlines across the Deschutes at this spot to add a little drama to their dives. This hike is about 1 mile round trip. Be prepared in the summer with plenty of water and sun protection, as well as keeping an eye out for rattlesnakes.

Alder Springs

The Alder Springs trailhead on Whychus Creek is a little trickier to find, but more than worth the effort. It is recommended to have a high-clearance 4WD vehicle to access this trailhead. This area has seasonal closures blocking the gravel road during winter, although hiking is still allowed.

At the start of the Alder Springs trailhead, you will have epic views of the Cascade range towering above the rolling hills and textured canyon walls above you. This trail starts with an immediate descent, and in the spring this area will be lit up by wildflowers, such as the green-banded mariposa lily. After meandering down toward the river you will witness canyon ramparts and the Deschutes formation, as well as pass by the springs. In the summertime, the fragrance from the wildflowers growing along the river’s edge will waft to your nose before you even see the springs! Continue on to a lush, shaded grove near the water, where it is possible to wade across Whychus Creek. From here, you can continue past several campsites and even trek on to the confluence of Deschutes River and Whychus Creek if you so desire. Make sure to bring enough snacks and water should this be your chosen route, as it tops out around 7 miles round trip.

Borden Beck Wildlife Preserve

This gem of a swimming hole is well-known to fly fisherman and local birders. This is a great spot to take little ones if you have them in tow. A short, flat trail leads you quickly through blackberry bushes, juniper, and sagebrush into an oasis in the desert. Be sure to glance behind you as you walk for an excellent view of the Three Sisters range when you get in just the right spot. Borden Beck boasts several entry points to the river, allowing visitors to cool off and play around. Be on the lookout for Canadian Geese that frequent the area near Eagle Rock where many people like to float and swim. The shallowest point is the first swimming area the trail will come upon, in the shadow of Eagle Rock. This is a perfect place for kids to play, provided you’ve brought flotation devices. A mere 50 yards away is another swimming hole just past the river rapids, which is favored by more experienced swimmers. Be aware that alcohol is prohibited in this area maintained by the Redmond Area Parks and Recreation District, and as always, leave no trace principles apply. To get to Borden Beck, head north from the tiny town of Terrebonne and take a left on Lower Bridge Way. Follow this road for 6.5 miles until you see an unassuming sign at the bottom of the hill. Parking is a small gravel lot and is free to the public.

Get Outside

If you’re looking to get outside as quickly as possible without a lot of fuss, these are the treks for you. It is important to follow the guidelines for public use posted at each location, as well as packing out any trash you may produce while you’re there. This will help ensure that other visitors (and you, when you return!) can enjoy the natural beauty of each location for years to come.

Pros – Good comfort with great support.

Cons – Not what some might call “stylish.”

Something to consider – Running shoes range from being minimalist with very little support, to having a much better support, depending on the needs of the owner. Check with a reputable running store, like Brooks Running, to have an expert fit a shoe to your needs.

Trail Running Shoes: These are much like traditional running shoes, but are purpose-built for people who run on loose terrain. They have an aggressive tread, are lightweight and breathable. Waterproof versions are available.

Pros – Aggressive tread, light weight and breathable.

Cons – May lack support. The tread may not work so well on pavement or other smooth/hard surfaces.

Something to consider – As with traditional running shoes, the tread is soft and may wear down quickly. Some trail runners have an aggressive tread, which will also wear down quickly if worn off the trail.

Training Shoes

Cross Training Shoes: These are some of the most popular shoes for those with an active lifestyle who may only want one pair of shoes. They are typically made from a material and pattern that doesn’t show the dirt. They have great support and traction, and are relatively water resistant and in some cases are waterproof.

Pros – Long lasting build with relatively good support and traction. Not offensive in appearance especially if worn with an outdoor style. Typically built to last.

Cons – Heavier than other shoes. May not breath as well as other shoes.

Something to consider – These shoes may become so practical that they are all you ever wear. After two years, you may need an intervention from close friends who will help you throw them away. You will most likely buy the exact same style.

Aerobics Shoes: These are made for your typical Zumba, step or Kick-boxing classes. They offer good side support and cushioning.

Pros – Good support and cushioning. A good all around shoe.

Cons – No waterproof option. Won’t last as long as cross-trainers. The style may not translate well from your Zumba class to QFC.

Something to Consider – To help them stay clean and last longer, have a pair of comfortable slip on shoes that you wear to and from your aerobics class. This will allow your feet and shoes to breath post workout, and could remedy any style concerns.

That’s the emotion felt by bargain hunters, treasure seekers and resellers alike as the new “boats” (That’s Goodwill talk for Giant Blue Carts) are rolled out. Pickers like me are looking for that next great score. Whether it be vintage clothing, collectibles or useable housewares, the diggers are ready to find some buried treasure.

I’m On A Boat

Boats rotate every 15-30 minutes, so before you think this is a a calm and orderly sifting through items, do realize this is serious shopping. It has been described to me as “throwing ‘bows,” with ‘BOWS being shorthand for ELBOWS. Pickers frantically dig shoulder to shoulder and elbow to elbow, sifting through multiple layers of donated items.

As a frequent digger, I’ve found cash, gold and yes, even some small diamonds. Those items are buried in the big blue “boats” far more frequently than anyone might think. For the most part, these treasures are from items that have been unsold at the regular Goodwill stores. Items that aren’t sold from the outlet are then bundled and sold to salvage companies.

On the very special occasion the Goodwill Outlet is filled with fresh, raw donated unsifted merchandise. This occurs when there are just too many donations to sort and sell. Occasionally you find that obscure, item that makes you wonder who purchaed it in the first place.

Safety First

Wear gloves…Trust me. There are plastic gloves available for free but I prefer wearing more durable leather gloves to prevent cuts, scrapes or even worse. Check out these Leather Gloves!

Familiar Faces

If you make a habit of shopping at the Goodwill Outlet store, you’ll see a lot of familiar faces. Honestly, people watching is half the fun. Maybe it’s the lady kissing the dog in her cart or the guy with OCD that arranges all of the books in the boat.

Many of the regular folks are resellers. Others are Ebayers, or shop owners looking to stock their shelves. Some are just casual thrift store shoppers.

For me the fun is in the digging and discovery at a very low cost. You pay by weight. Up to 9 pounds at $1.69. The more you buy the cheaper it gets. if you go over 25 pounds you pay just .89 cents per pound. Trust me, it’s not hard to reach the 25 pound mark.

Clothing and Housewares

Eric Thompson – Goodwill picker

The Goodwill Outlet is much like a warehouse. It is separated into two sections. One is filled with rows of clothing and the other is filled with housewares.

On the clothing side, vintage clothing is mixed in with brand name items and yes, even your everyday nasty, gross donated item. It’s up to you to determine the legitimacy of the slick Coach trench coat but pickers have found the real deal and have made a career of doing so on a regular basis.

On the housewares side is where I do my business. I look for collectibles to resell on eBay (For the love of all that is holy, please check eBay for the seller comicgeek12). My house looks like an episode of hoarders and my garage hasn’t housed a car in 4 years.

In housewares you can find electronics, collectables and just about anything you can imagine that someone might donate to the Goodwill. People think I spend a fortune on toys for my kid. What they don’t realize is that for just 89 cents any digger can be a hero. It isn’t all glorious however. My daughter once asked if she could ever get any new toys. NOPE! The hottest new toys will be at the Goodwill in 6 months. Patience is a wonderful quality for any child to develop.

A Win Win Situation

Beware, shopping here can be extremely habit forming. If somebody is ever looking for me during my free time, they will most likely find me scouring for treasures. Ultimately, it’s fun. You can find some really great treasures and even make some money if you are so inclined.

An added benefit to shopping at Goodwill, is that you are supporting local jobs social assistance programs with your purchase.

Either way, it’s an adventure. And trust me, wear gloves.
