If you’re looking for fun things to do in Spokane, you’re in luck.

Are you looking for something to do over Labor Day? An art fest in Spokane? Festivals? All of these things, as well as a rich history packed with unique experiences, can be found in this small city.

Maybe Spokane isn’t the first city you think of to add to your PNW or Washington state to-do list. But you may find that changes after you learn all the fun things there are to do here.

Whether you are visiting Spokane for labor day weekend or coming at a different time of year, you will find plenty of fun things to do.

Here are 7 of the best Spokane events you can attend. By its conclusion, you may just be ready to make this trip every year!

#1. Spokane Hoopsfest

Hosted each year at the end of July, Spokane Hoopfest is an annual 3-on-3 basketball tournament held. It is the largest event of it’s kind, making it an exciting event that maintains a “niche” feel.

The Hoopsfest event has drawn upwards of 27,000 players, and in 2011, had over 7,000 teams registered for the event. Clearly, people in Spokane love their hoops, and even more enjoy watching the event take place!

Participation in Hoopfest ranges from watching, to volunteering, to participating in the actual competition. Think you have what it takes? Here are the official rules for competing in the tournament.

#2. World-Class Wine Tasting

Who says Spokane can’t be home to great tasting wine? No one, and if they do, they are misinformed. Spokane is actually a fantastic place for tasting wines, experiencing new things, and learning about the region.

The Pacific Northwest is home to some of the finest grown grapes in the entire country, and Spokane wineries feature them in their drink. From tasting rooms to wine cellars, to being served by experienced sommeliers, you can find anything wine-related you’re looking for here.

For example, Barrister Winery offers enough cool scenery and finely aged wines to make any trip memorable.

#3. Spokane County Interstate Fair

If you’re looking for Spokane Labor Day weekend events, look no further than the annual county fair. In the realm of Spokane riverfront park events, you won’t find a more popular or well perceived fair in the area.

A ten-day event beginning each year after Labor day, locals come together to put on exhibits containing arts, crafts, food preservation, livestock, and more. The fair is said to generate about $7m annually for the greater Spokane area, which means you are also helping support local small businesses and vendors.

The event promotes family-oriented entertainment and hosts events that are kid-friendly throughout its 10-day setup. This is an event you won’t want to miss.

#4. Musicfest Northwest

Held in May each year, the Musicfest Northwest event is one of the many Spokane festivals locals and tourists enjoy.

They label it as a part-learning, part competitive experience all about celebrating the art of performance. Entrants may earn medals, cash awards and performance opportunities on radio and in evening concerts. And as an added incentive, young artist Division winners perform with the Spokane Symphony.

The bulletin, as well as changes for 2018, can be found here for anyone interested in attending the event.

#5. Bloomsday Run

Looking for something in Spokane to stay fit? Look no further than the Lilac Bloomsday Run.

Each year, approximately 50,000 runners toe the starting line, making it one of the largest races in the Pacific Northwest each year.

The race has been held annually since 1977 on the first Sunday of each May. Because there are so many events in May, this race can be either a fun fitness challenge to keep your trip going, or be the sole reason you visit Spokane. The race is 12km (about 7 miles), so you may need to train a bit before participating.

For race information and to read previous year’s results, click here.

#6. Pig Out In The Park

Maybe you aren’t into the running scene, but instead looking to savor the local foods. This is the event for you! Labeled as a food and music festival, Pig Out In The Park is perfect for your end of summer or labor day weekend activities in Spokane.

Some fun “statistics” from Pig Out In The Park include:

  • 47 food booths
  • 225 menu items
  • 3 adult beverage gardens
  • 3 separate concerts on 3 different stages

Time-sensitive events like happy hours, local artists performances, and more are scheduled throughout the day, as well as large markets featuring many tasty local vendors eager to show off their foods. For anyone with an appetite, this is a Spokane event worth being there for.

Want to learn more? The event layout can be found here to give you a better idea.

#7. Torchlight Parade

Another event to add to the plethora of Spokane festivals in May, the Torchlight Parade celebrates America’s armed forces. Whether you are there to support the military, or just love American history, this event is as educational as it is social.

Their mission is “honoring our military, empowering our youth, and showcasing our region”, and the event has taken place annually since 1938. They expect an annual crowd of about 215,000, with 150,000 spectators watching the parade take place.

For those looking to do something unique while visiting Spokane, this is a good option.

Wrap-Up on Spokane Events

Spokane may not be the biggest city on the map, but the annual events and festivals held here certainly make it a place worth considering. Whether you are interested in the arts, food, fitness, or history, there is an event for each guest looking to visit the city.

If you’re looking for food or music, consider events like Pig Out In The Park, Musicfest Northwest, or the Spokane County Interstate Fair.

For sport or fitness related events, be sure to check out the legendary Hoopsfest. Alternatively, if you’re looking for a race to test your mettle and endurance in the PNW, check out the massive Lilac Bloomsday Race.

Toys

Bargains await the urban miner at Spokane’s Very Own GoodWill Outlet Store. This treasure trove is located at 1406 E Front Avenue.

“GO!”

That’s the emotion felt by bargain hunters, treasure seekers and resellers alike as the new “boats” (That’s Goodwill talk for Giant Blue Carts) are rolled out. Pickers like me are looking for that next great score. Whether it be vintage clothing, collectibles or useable housewares, the diggers are ready to find some buried treasure.

I’m On A Boat

Boats rotate every 15-30 minutes, so before you think this is a a calm and orderly sifting through items, do realize this is serious shopping. It has been described to me as “throwing ‘bows,” with ‘BOWS being shorthand for ELBOWS.  Pickers frantically dig shoulder to shoulder and elbow to elbow, sifting through multiple layers of donated items.

As a frequent digger, I’ve found cash, gold and yes, even some small diamonds. Those items are  buried in the big blue “boats” far more frequently than anyone might think. For the most part, these treasures are from items that have been unsold at the regular Goodwill stores.  Items that aren’t sold from the outlet are then bundled and sold to salvage companies.

On the very special occasion the Goodwill Outlet is filled with fresh, raw donated unsifted merchandise. This occurs when there are just too many donations to sort and sell. Occasionally you find that obscure, item that makes you wonder who purchaed it in the first place.

Safety First

Wear gloves…Trust me. There are plastic gloves available for free but I prefer wearing more durable leather gloves to prevent cuts, scrapes or even worse. Check out these Leather Gloves!

Familiar Faces

If you make a habit of shopping at the Goodwill Outlet store, you’ll see a lot of familiar faces. Honestly, people watching is half the fun. Maybe it’s the lady kissing the dog in her cart or the guy with OCD that arranges all of the books in the boat.

Many of the regular folks are resellers. Others are Ebayers, or shop owners looking to stock their shelves. Some are just casual thrift store shoppers.

For me the fun is in the digging and discovery at a very low cost. You pay by weight. Up to 9 pounds at $1.69. The more you buy the cheaper it gets. if you go over 25 pounds you pay just .89 cents per pound. Trust me, it’s not hard to reach the 25 pound mark.

Clothing and Housewares

Eric Thompson - Goodwill picker

Eric Thompson – Goodwill picker

The Goodwill Outlet is much like a warehouse. It is separated into two sections. One is filled with rows of clothing and the other is filled with housewares.

On the clothing side, vintage clothing is mixed in with brand name items and yes, even your everyday nasty, gross donated item. It’s up to you to determine the legitimacy of the slick Coach trench coat but pickers have found the real deal and have made a career of doing so on a regular basis.

On the housewares side is where I do my business. I look for collectibles to resell on eBay (For the love of all that is holy, please check eBay for the seller comicgeek12). My house looks like an episode of hoarders and my garage hasn’t housed a car in 4 years.

In housewares you can find electronics, collectables and just about anything you can imagine that someone might donate to the Goodwill. People think I spend a fortune on toys for my kid. What they don’t realize is that for just 89 cents any digger can be a hero. It isn’t all glorious however. My daughter once asked if she could ever get any new toys. NOPE! The hottest new toys will be at the Goodwill in 6 months. Patience is a wonderful quality for any child to develop.

A Win Win Situation

Beware, shopping here can be extremely habit forming. If somebody is ever looking for me during my free time, they will most likely find me scouring for treasures.  Ultimately, it’s fun. You can find some really great treasures and even make some money if you are so inclined.

An added benefit to shopping at Goodwill, is that you are supporting local jobs social assistance programs with your purchase.

Either way, it’s an adventure. And trust me, wear gloves.

As Washington State’s second biggest city, Spokane is well-known for its stunning scenery, including sweeping mountain views and glistening lakes. The Top 8 Best Restaurants in Spokane

Ranging from heart-warming brunch spots to fine dining, delicious sandwich bars, waffle shops and scrumptious grills – eat your heart out in Spokane!

Some of the best restaurants in Spokane include:

1. Chaps Coffee Co.

Chaps doubles as both a bruncher’s haven and hearty dinner spot.

If you’re looking for nothing but comfort food, Chaps is your go-to.

Set in a farmhouse dating back to 1912, the owners Celeste and Gina have converted the building into a bakery and restaurant of their own.

Chaps also offer a large outdoor patio to soak up the morning sunshine while enjoying popular dishes such as maples scones and blueberry french toast.

If you’re looking for heartier fare, make a meal of it with flat iron steak and mashed potatoes, homemade beef stroganoff or lamb chops.

The hands-on owners are the secret to the success and buzz of Chaps, making you real right at home!

2. Ruins

Another one of the best restaurants in Spokane to add to your list is Ruins.

The perfect spot for a midday treat, Ruins is a gourmet sandwich bar of sorts, offering over 10 different sandwich options. The menu also includes a selection of kimchi and other spicy dishes, but what you really should go for is a freshly made sandwich.

Averaging around $8 per sandwich, portions are hearty and generous.

Sandwich options such as the Ahi tuna and cold fried chicken will truly leave you wanting more! Ruins also feature an interesting drinks menu, including freshly made sodas, lemonade, and sparkling waters.

If you’re looking for something a little different in Spokane, even a little low-key, Ruins is just the spot.

Bear in mind the restaurant menu changes with the seasons, so get your favorite sandwich while it’s hot!

3. Downriver Grill

No list of best restaurants in Spokane is complete without Downriver Grill.

Known as a hot spot for many ‘Spokanites’, Downriver Grill is ideal for a laid-back lunch or dinner and a few cheeky drinks.

With a large sheet menu which rotates every fortnight and updates seasonally, the folks at Downriver Grill care about local, fresh ingredients.

The owners put a great emphasis on using locally sourced produce and unique recipes, and it really shows in all their dishes.

If you try anything at Downriver Grill, it needs to be their appetizer of gorgonzola fries and a juicy burger made from some of the best quality meat in Spokane.

Their handcrafted cocktails have a naughty hit and keep many a local coming back for more.

4. The Scoop

Nestled in the neighborhood of South Hill, The Scoop has been serving its delicious ice-cream here for over a decade.

Each ice-cream flavor is hand-crafted and made hourly in store, using liquid nitrogen and only the finest ingredients to perfect their craft. Offering a range of 16 different ice-cream flavors, it’s a feast for both parents and kiddies.

Unique flavors include mocha brownie, banoffee pie, blackberry guava sorbet, and chocolate buttercup, to name a few!

But the real reason you should pop into The Scoop is for their freshly made waffles. They offer both sweet and savory waffle options, including waffle sandwiches crammed with ham, cream cheese, and jalapenos.

Try their Berries and Biscoff Belgian waffle, made with berries, Biscoff cookie butter and whipped cream- pure heaven for those with a sweet tooth.

5. Zona Blanca

For something a little left of center, Zona Blanca is a good place to head.

It’s known as one of the best restaurants in Spokane for this very reason – they dare to be different. Zona Blanca is the brainchild of Chef Chad White and is essentially a ceviche bar which was opened in 2016.

Chad believes in using fresh, local ingredients in order to emphasize sustainability in all Zona Blanca’s dishes.

Ceviche is a method which is all about preservation and is a very basic way of preparing fish and other seafood.

Essentially, Zona Blanca offers very simple food, prepared in a manner that screams fine dining.

If you are seafood fan, Zona Blanca is a taste sensation. Dishes worth sampling include the Baja ceviche and Jalisco – a take on ‘surf and turf’ ceviche.

If you are still easing yourself into the ceviche game, try the utterly delicious chorizo torta.

6. Yards Bruncheon

Well-known as a favorite brunch spot in Spokane, Yards Bruncheon is breakfast lover’s dream.

If you’re entertaining out-of-town guests, take them to Yards Bruncheon for stellar views of the Spokane River and delicious, hearty fare.

For a family-friendly, slow and relaxed pace, Yards offers a great setting with its vibrant interior and generous food portions.

Find all your breakfast favorites, and then some, including Irish eggs benedict, avocado toast, chicken and waffles, breakfast fajitas and even Poutine!

Looking for a spot of exercise before or after your breakfast?

Do the Centennial Trail which starts from Yards, which you can either walk, run or bike. You’ve got to earn those calories, right?

7. Prohibition Gastropub

Get in early on a Friday night and sample fresh oysters like you’ve never had before at Prohibition Gastropub.

There’s a reason this establishment has made it to the list of best restaurants in Spokane – because they go above and beyond with their food preparation.

Game changer dishes include the house staple, jalapeno poppers stuffed with mixed cheese, roasted garlic and wrapped in bacon.

The Al Capone burger, infused with coffee grounds in the burger patty, make for a juicy explosion of flavor.

Finish off your evening with the famous whiskey-infused cheesecake, made with Pendleton Whiskey, served with an Amaretto sauce.

Life changing!

Sit back, unwind to live music, great beer on-tap and a great selection of whiskeys at Prohibition Gastropub.

8. Luna

If you’re up for true fine dining at its best, make your reservation at Luna.

With its sublime setting including lush greenery, a wisteria tree in full bloom and beautifully refined decor, Luna is a real treat. Reminiscent of a French cafe, Luna is perfect for long lunches, weekend brunches or an intimate dinner with a loved one.

They also offer private rooms for hosting functions for an upcoming special occasion.

Featuring its own wine cellar with over 5000 variations of wine and an onsite fruit and vegetable garden, Luna really is a foodie’s delight.

Dine on delicately prepared dishes such as the prawn salad, pan-seared salmon, and curried cauliflower, or go more casual with wood-fired pizza.

One of the best things to do in Spokane is discovering spots that only locals seem to know and love. If ever there was such a spot it’s the Garland Theater, with it’s vintage vibe, second run movies and a bar that is steps from the concessions. But before we take a deeper look at the Garland, let’s look at a couple of other local treats.

Hidden Tricks of Spokane

Every community has their hidden tricks and gems. One of my favorites is the “secret dessert” at the Onion downtown.  The hot fudge dipping sauce takes this delight over the top (Pssst… ask your server about the deep fried Oreos. They are a culinary treat)

Another local trick is that farthest Eastern window at Dicks Hamburgers is where you will find the fastest line.

If I mention more, I risk being run out of town.  However, there is one piece of information that I can share without relocating my family. It is the Garland Theater and it’s a local treasure.

Read 5 Fun Things To Do In Spokane

The Garland Theater.

The Garland theater is a historic 40’s era single screen movie house located in central Spokane.  The theater is a bookend to the historic and revamped Garland District.  The theater show second run films but offers a top tier experience.  They even have special event movies.

For me, seeing a film at the Garland is by far a more enjoyable experience than catching a flick at a modern theater.  Sure the seats might recline at the Regal Theater at Northtown Mall,  but the experience of taking my family to see the not so latest releases is probably akin to the experience my parents and grandparents had when they watched Dick Van Dyke dance across the screen.

How about another throwback,  the price of the ticket.  At just $5 a head I can afford to take my family to a movie.  Heck, even the concessions are reasonably priced.  For $17 you get a large refillable popcorn popcorn, candy and a large soda.  For just $70, you can by an annual pass.  With prices like that, I don’t need to sell my organs for the family to see all the new Star Wars movies.

A Beer & A Movie

Before Samuel L. Jackson was swinging light sabers or saving passengers from all those snakes on that Mother F plane.  I remember him having a conversation with John Travolta about having a glass of beer in the theater (Pulp Fiction anyone?).  That blew my 18 year old mind.  Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought that one day I would drink a beer in a theater while watching Thor clash with the forces of evil.

I’ve found that the beer in the theatre thing comes in handy when fulfilling parental duties by watching Pixar’s second latest film. Is it just me, or is alcohol sometimes the only way to get through kid-flicks?  FYI, I don’t think there is enough beer to get me through Paddington 2.  Just sayin’ (Opinions are not necessarily those of Clever Neighbor).

The Bon Bon Bar

Just of the The Garland Theater’s concession area is the Bon Bon. It’s a great little bar.  They have specialty cocktails and the traditional trivia & Bingo nights.  Don’t assume it’s just another bar though.  It may be small, but it has a cool retro vibe.  Wether you want a pre-show cocktail or a chills spot to enjoy, it gets two thumbs up from me.  Super huge bonus, you can take your drink to the movie.

Host A Private Screening

In case you didn’t know, Spokane has been the setting for a number of films over the years, thank in no small part to North By Northwest which is located close to Downtown Spokane. Let’s say you just inherited a good sum of money and have always dreamed of producing a film starring your best friend and your dog. The Garland Theater is available for rent! They are glad to host a screening party for your film before it’s sent off to Cannes or Sundance.

Beyond screenings, they host corporate events, team building exercises, Holiday parties and more. Click here to learn more.

A Spokane Experience

Before you head to the show, recognize that this is a unique experience.  I grew up going to a second run theater in my hometown Oxnard, (which is almost as nice as it sounds).  Anyway, I don’t know how shaving 8 bucks off of a ticket changes the dynamics of the audience but it really does.  You’ll see folks talking to each other up and down the aisles. If you go to a matinee you might even get a 1 year old serenading you for an hour and a half.  That being said, it’s kind of awesome. The Garland Theater provides a sense of community that you don’t get at a modern theater.

The Garland Theater is not simply a movie experience, it’s a Spokane experience.  Folks from all over the community come to meet up and enjoy a films and maybe a beverage or two. It’s a safe place to visit with your neighbors. It’s fun. Folks are there to have a good time. The minor distractions are more humorous than annoying.

All in all, this gem isn’t known too well or widely by outsiders, but to us locals it’s a treasure. So if you are looking for some things to do in Spokane this week or weekend, check out the Garland. It is a treat!

Parting Shots

If I had one complaint, the lights come on after the film a little too quickly.  Weird?  Not really. If I had a wish I’d ask Pixar to make a movie that doesn’t make me cry.

5 Fun Things to do in Downtown Spokane

Spokane is a city full of history and reputation, from hosting the world’s fair to inventing Father’s day… But what is there to do in downtown Spokane in this day and age?

If you are fortunate to find yourself in the beautiful downtown Spokane area here are a few of our top 5 fun things to do.

Take a stroll on a bridge above the Upper Spokane falls near Downtown Spokane.

If waterfalls are your thing be sure to check out Spokane Falls in the spring as this is when it is most powerful (31,000 cubic feet per second powerful.)

With a beautiful park and bridges, there are plenty of angles to view and experience the waterfall, not to mention grab that perfect Instagram pic. Rainbows are highly common in the falls, which has earned it quite the reputation.

The river runs through downtown Spokane. The falls are just a few minutes walk away.

2. Iron Goat Brewing Co.

Iron Goat is part of the Inland Northwest Ale Trail an organization set up to promote local breweries on the network. When you visit any affiliated brewery you know that you will be sampling some of the finest local craft beers.

Iron Goat Brewing started with a conversation in a local Spokane bar between two strangers and has now become a fully established brewery complete with a kitchen, taproom and a wide selection of beers/sours.

The Garbage Goat, created by Paula Turnball, can be found in Downtown Spokane

To date, the brewery has crafted over 150 beers and has a seasonally rotating menu.

If you’re interested in local beer and cuisine then you’d better pay a visit while in Downtown Spokane.

Why the name Iron Goat? Paula Turnball created a metal goat with a built in trash-vacuum for the World Expo in 1974. The unusual sculpture can be viewed in Riverfront Park and has become a local icon.

(Watch a local news story about the Garbage Goat here)

Don’t worry if a beer isn’t your thing, they have plenty of other options available including wine.
