Whether you are visiting Boise for a weekend or are a current resident looking for some new activities, there is no shortage of fun and unique things to do in the Boise area. With a lively downtown area, nature surrounding, and running through the middle of town, as well as unique historical and cultural attractions, there is a little something for everyone in Idaho’s Capitol.

Explore the Boise River and Greenbelt

One of the best features of Boise is the Boise River flowing right through the downtown area. In the summer months, you can float the river for free (or rent a raft if you need one). Starting at Barber Park and ending at Anne Morrison Park, the float takes about 2-4 hours depending on the time of year. If staying dry is more your style, you can also bike along the Boise Greenbelt, a 25-mile long bike path that runs parallel to the river that has numerous parks along the way. Right next to the Greenbelt is the Boise Zoo which is great for children and adults alike.

Go on a hike

You’re never far from a good hike when you’re in Boise. The most popular of all the hikes is the famed Table Rock Trail. The trailhead starts at The Old Idaho Penitentiary Site (more on that later), and is a 3.7 mile out and back hike. The trail is fairly steep, so if you’re going in the summer months, try to go early to beat the heat or later in the day to enjoy a wonderful sunset overlooking the city. If you are wanting to take in the views without the strain of a steep hike, there is a road that leads up to the top of table rock, you can find directions here.

If you are wanting to hike with a little less foot traffic, Camel’s Back Park is another great option, although this one can still be fairly busy in the summertime. Military Reserve is a good easy option that features a dog park, bike park, and stream nearby. The 14 Tram Trail Trailhead is another gorgeous hike with numerous options branching off of it, this is heavily trafficked by mountain bikers so just be aware.

Explore some history

One of the underrated parts of Boise is its historical attractions. As mentioned earlier, The Old Idaho State Penitentiary Site is a wonderful historical tour experience. The penitentiary opened its doors in 1872 but is now used to educate people about the history of our prison system, notorious inmates, as well as an in-depth tour of the inner-workings of the old penitentiary.

The Basque Museum & Culture Center isn’t something you would expect to run into in downtown Boise. The Basque Center offers people to explore the history of the Basque people and their heritage. They offer guided tours, classes, and events on a regular basis. If you are wanting to just explore yourself you are more than welcome to, you can even get a literal taste at Ansots Basque Chorizo’s.

The Anne Frank Memorial is another must see for history buffs. The memorial includes a life-sized bronze statue of Anne Frank looking out a window, but there is much more to it. The memorial encourages people to think about issues our society has faced in the past and are still dealing with today, mostly about human rights. It puts on display some of man’s triumphs, as well as some of our darker times. Visiting the memorial will surely make you take a deeper look at life and come away with a different perspective.

Take a day trip

If you are in Boise for more than a day or two, it is well worth it to explore the surrounding areas. From sand dunes, to hot springs, to snowy mountains, there are plenty of exciting day trips within a couple hours drive of Boise.

The Bruneau Dunes State Park is about an hour drive southeast from Boise that offers unique views that you don’t typically find in the inland northwest. The main feature is the tallest single-structure sand dune in North America. At over 470-feet above the desert floor it is quite a sight, visitors are welcome to hike or ride a horse to the top, if you are feeling extra adventurous you can rent a sandboard and ride down the dune! If you are wanting to stay past sundown, the state park also offers an excellent observatory that lets you get a wonderful view of space.

There are numerous hot springs in the surrounding areas, ranging from large, easily accessible pools, to tiny pools that are off the beaten path. If you’re wanting a resort-style hot spring experience with man-made pools we recommend The Springs in Idaho City, Goldfork Hot Springs outside of Donnely, or Miracle Hot Springs down in Buhl. If you are wanting a little more nature with your hot springs check out Kirkham, Trail Creek, or Snively hot springs. If you want to explore more hot springs options follow this link.

Lastly, if you are wanting to get out of the city for a smaller town feel, McCall might be the place for you. A little over a two hour drive north, McCall puts you in a gorgeous mountain town that’s a popular destination for visitors and residents of Boise. In the winter you can find great skiing at nearby Tamarack and Brundage ski resorts. In the summertime the lake and milder temperatures offer a welcome retreat from the scorching summers that Boise usually experiences.

Explore!

No matter what you choose to do while you’re in Boise, just make sure you get out to find what interests you. Boise offers so many things to do and such a wide variety of activities you can spend day after day exploring new parts of the city you never would’ve guessed were there.

portland coffee

There’s nothing quite like sitting down with a big, steaming cup of fresh, hot coffee.

Of all the occasionally weird and always wondrous things people know Portland for, the city’s coffee shops are the really a gem for this beautiful city.

Portland is famous for its coffee, and Portland coffee shops are a set well above cafes in nearly every other city in the United States.

That said, there are those famous few that exceed the precedent that the city sets.

If you’re looking for a great place to grab a cup of joe in PDX, but aren’t sure where to start, we can help.

Here are ten must-visit coffee shops in Portland where you’re sure to find a perfect cup of coffee.

1. Coava Coffee Roasters

If you boiled all the eccentricities that make Portland, Portland down into a single cup of coffee–you’d find that particular cup at Coava.

At Coava coffee is not merely a caffeine boost to get you through the day, it’s an art form.

Coava baristas obsess over everything from soil composition to their intricate, and well worth the wait, slow drip system. Each cup is expertly crafted to extract all the rich, aromatic flavors from their precision roasted coffee beans.

If you prefer a cup of straight, black coffee, then Coava is the spot for you–sugar and cream are not needed here.

2. Good Coffee

This coffee house has a name that suits it perfectly.

You’ll find a plethora of excellent coffee and espresso drinks at Good Coffee. On top of that, you’ll also find a fantastic place to enjoy your expertly crafted beverage of choice.

If you’re looking for a coffee shop with a real home away from home vibe, then Good Coffee is just the place for you.

3. Sterling Coffee Roasters

A more apt term for the baristas over at Sterling would be brewmasters.

You won’t be able to find anyone obsessing over soil samples or bean varieties over at Sterling. But, you will be able to find an excellent cup of joe and a fantastic place to sit and enjoy it.

Sterling feels more like hanging out in a good friend’s exceedingly large breakfast nook than a coffee shop–and that’s what makes it so great.

When you visit, try one of Sterling’s uniquely famous espresso flights before settling in with a large craft of their classic bean juice.

4. Behind the Museum Cafe

Sometimes you want the coffee shop experience, with something a little lighter on the caffeine.

Behind the Museum Cafe is one of the most zen coffee houses you’ll ever find. With its open and minimalistic design, it’s hard to get stressed in this coffee shop.

If that double espresso seems a little too extreme for Behind the Museum, they have a wide variety of teas to help warm you up and calm you down.

And if you were wondering, yes–it really is behind a museum.

5. Barista

If you’re a coffee-lover, but not the artsy type, it can be hard to find the perfect coffee shop to suit your style in Portland.

That’s where Barista comes in.

There are a few Barista locations scattered across the city. But each location features the same clean, elegant coziness everyone can appreciate and enjoy.

Barista bosts a series of different roasts from local coffee roasters from across the city. So, you’re guaranteed to find something local you’re going to love.

6. Heart Coffee

It’s the perfect coffee shop for the Scandinavian mad scientist inside all us. #dontcalluscrazy

While the outward aesthetic and style of Heart Coffee caused a bit of a rift amongst local coffee-fans, most people can agree that a good cup is a good cup.

Heart has become famous for its unique Aeropress system, that generates light but immensely flavorful cups of coffee.

7. Either/Or

If you’re into the broader world of coffee possibilities, then you may be able to find your wildest dreams come to life at Either/Or.

More than a coffee shop, Either/Or feels like an art studio — where coffee is the medium of choice.

Coffee mocktails, city-famous pastries, and surprising flavor combinations run rampant in this cafe.

Either/Or also features a Portland-inspired interior design that makes it a great place to enjoy a cup of coffee and your next deep read.

8. Cathedral Coffee

If you’re in the mood for a heavenly cup of coffee, Cathedral Coffee is the place for you.

Don’t let the name fool you. Cathedral Coffee is far from stuffy. This strange coffee spot is full of art, life, and warm, natural wood–making it an excellent place to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Cathedral Coffee’s coffee is undeniably worthy of praise. (Was that good for a dad joke?) But, if you’re looking for a real religious experience you may want to try one of the fresh, made-in-house wonders in their bakery display case. (We’re on fire with the dad jokes today!)

9.Spella Caff?

Spella Caff? has existed in some form for well over a decade–so you can be sure that its coffee is something of a landmark nowadays.

If an authentic Italian roast is your cup of tea–or coffee–then Spella is the place for you.

Spella Caff? looks and feels like a low-key down to earth style cafe, but don’t let its looks fool you. This coffee shop is cranking out one of the best Italian roasts available on this side of the Pacific.

10. Stumptown Coffee Roasters

While Portland’s namesake coffee house has a few different locations, every spot feels like the true original.

At Stumptown, consistency is king. It doesn’t matter which location you visit you can always expect to walk away with a top-notch cup of coffee.

Stumptown puts a lot of emphasis on their gold-star barista training program, which is how they maintain quality across the board.

It seems like every other coffee shop in America is doing a version of cold brew these days. But, Stumptown practically perfected the art with their nitro-cold brew system.

A nice iced-down Stumptown cold brew is the perfect way to refresh and jumpstart yourself when you hit that midday slump.

11. (BONUS) Nossa Familia Coffee

We just had to add one more because it was so good.  From the second you step into Nossa Familia until you leave, you’re surrounded by the thought that these folks really know their coffee.  A simple menu, with a few fun options like Portuguese for “Fire Mocha” or Sweet Mocha with Cardamon and Cayenne.  The kids had steamers and hot chocolate, and we enjoyed the simplicities of one of the best latte’s we’ve ever had.

With mostly standing room only and a line of people waiting to buy their next latte, we headed on our way with coffee’s in hand.  Don’t miss this jewel of Portland.

The Best Portland Coffee Shops

It’s no secret to locals and tourists alike that Portland is one of the best cities for coffee lovers in the country. So, no matter where you wind up wasting an afternoon, you’re sure to find an excellent cup of coffee.

Now that you’re familiar with a few Portland coffee shops, why not explore the rest of what this beautiful and eclectic city has to offer.  See more at Clever Neighbor Portland.

italian restaurants in olympia

Everyone loves Italian food. Old and young, 70 percent of people say they eat Italian food as often as once a month.

Italian food is an iconic cuisine that is appetizing to people almost everyone. If you’re a fan of great authentic Italian food, you know the importance of staying up to date with the best places to go.  Especially if you’re not on the east coast!

So, here’s a list of the best Italian restaurants in Olympia. Try not to let your mouth water while you read!

The Best Italian Restaurants in Olympia

Pasta, breadsticks, and meatballs; you name it, these restaurants have it.

1. Basilico

This Italian restaurant has one of the most inviting interiors you’ll see in the PNW. With a rustic feel to its food – and its decorating – you’ll feel like you’re sitting in old world Italy.

Their menu features a long list of fine red or white wines for anyone’s palate. They also feature many other drink selections. The food menu has a terrific selection of appetizers, entrees, and pasta plates. If you have trouble deciding on what you want, they also put together tasting menus. But you’ve got to try their homemade pasta.

Our recommendations are the pasta with ground pork and mushrooms in a cream sauce and the eggplant parmesan appetizers.  Really quite spectacular dishes.

Some people sometimes feel left out at Italian restaurants because of a gluten intolerance. But that won’t be the case here, because Basilico’s also offers gluten-free options. This is very uncommon in the Italian restaurant world. #glutenfreeforme

2. Casa Mia

When a restaurant earns awards for their food, you know it’s going to be good. Some of the best Italian food comes with a heartfelt backstory, and Casa Mia has that. Recently they were awarded first prize in the “Pizza Across America” contest for their Chicken Pizza, and have twice won Pizza Today International Pizza Recipe Contest.

Our recommendations are the $8 lunch special with their house salad and homemade vinaigrette dressing and minestrone soup.

Between their pizza and pasta menu, your mouth will water reading the descriptions. They’re also able to accommodate a range of dietary needs.

3. Pizzeria La Gitana

If you’re looking for a unique environment with quality food, look no further. This restaurant boasts a kitchen full of imported, organic ingredients.

There are plenty of salads and appetizers on the menu. But the real star is their long, detailed list of pizza. This menu is full of white pizza, pesto pizza, and almost any other type of pizza you can imagine.

Our recommendations are the Italian Classic pizza and a pint of Peroni on tap.

And they even offer delivery for when you’re not feeling up for a night out and a very good gluten free crust.

4. The Mark

If fine dining is a little more your speed, welcome to The Mark. Its rustic, romantic setting is a great place for anniversaries and even birthdays. In fact, they also host other events such as weddings

Their menu is extensive, offering the classics as well as some new takes. If you visit this restaurant, prepare to leave completely satisfied. Pasta’s, surf and turf, and more will keep you coming back.

Our recommendations are the vodka grapefruit with fresh squeezed organic ruby red grapefruit juice and a grass fed NY steak with green beans for dinner.

Don’t forget to leave room for dessert. Tiramisu and chocolate cake are only a few of the delicious, post-dinner items you should try.

South Sound Cinema

Are you a film buff living in Tacoma?

Whether you enjoy watching the latest flicks at a local South Sound movie theater or classic movies at home, you might be curious to learn how many movies were filmed in and around Tacoma.

When you’re not busy enjoying all the fabulous outdoor activities Tacoma has to offer, check out one of these iconic movies that were filmed in the area.

1. 10 Things I Hate About You

Perhaps the most iconic movie filmed in Tacoma (at least for kids of the 90s) was the 1999 hit romantic comedy 10 Things I Hate About You.

A modern-day retelling of Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew, the film is best known as Heath Ledger’s breakout role. Funnily enough, he went from an unknown in Hollywood to landing the role after seeing the script from a friend-of-a-friend.

Ledger wooed every teenage girl that year with his song-and-dance routine filmed at Stadium High School’s Stadium Bowl. The school was the backdrop for a majority of the movie, along with a private residence on North Junett Street.

The film launched not only Heath Ledger’s career, but also the careers of Julia Stiles, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Gabrielle Union. Talk about being cast in the right film at the right time!

2. Enough

In 2002, the Tacoma area became the filming location for an unconventional thriller: Enough.

Starring Jennifer Lopez and Billy Campbell, the film follows the story of an abused wife who takes her young daughter and flees for their lives. After changing her identity and trying to start over, she soon learns her husband won’t let them go.

Although the film received mixed reviews from critics, most viewers love the final scene of the movie. Jennifer Lopez, after studying a rigorous self-defense course, is able to hold her own in a very physical fight with her vicious ex.

How does the story end? You’ll have to watch it and find out.

3. The Hand That Rocks the Cradle

Another twisted thriller filmed in Tacoma was 1992’s The Hand That Rocks the Cradle.

Starring Rebecca De Mornay and Annabella Sciorra, the story follows a psychopathic nanny hellbent on destroying the family she works for. Suspenseful with plenty of action (and a few well-placed murders), this movie is sure to send a few shivers down your spine.

Most of the movie was filmed in a private home on North Yakima Avenue and nearby Wright Park. Interestingly, the character Michael Bartell gives the home’s real address during a phone call scene in the movie.

4. Stephen King’s Rose Red

Originally scripted as a feature film, Stephen King’s Rose Red was instead turned into a TV miniseries in 2002.

As you’d expect of anything written by Stephen King, the story is an intense supernatural thriller. Set in a haunted mansion called Rose Red, a team of psychics is invited to stay in the house to study its “activity.”

Most of the film was shot in the historic Thornewood Castle on Thorne Lane. Far from a reproduction, the “castle” is actually a 500-year old English manor that was disassembled and shipped to Washington in 1908.

5. I Love You to Death

This little-known 1990 film featured a huge ensemble cast that later went on to bigger (and more famous) productions.

I Love You to Death is a dark comedy starring Kevin Kline, Tracey Ullman, River Phoenix, and Keanu Reeves. It’s loosely based on a real-life attempted murder that occurred in 1983 when a betrayed wife repeatedly tried to kill her womanizing husband.

The film features many iconic scenes around Tacoma, including the historic Bostwick Building on Antique Row. Bob’s Java Jive, Stadium Bowl, and Holy Rosary Church also make appearances in the film.

6. Prefontaine

Even the most devout Jared Leto fans may have missed his 1997 biopic film about long-distance runner Steve Prefontaine.

The story follows the athlete’s rise to fame in the 1972 Olympics held in Munich, Germany. History fans will appreciate the film’s portrayal of the Munich Massacre terrorist attacks that occurred that same year.

Interestingly, Prefontaine became a track star while attending the University of Oregon in Eugene. The filming location for the movie, however, was Tacoma’s own Peyton Field, at the University of Puget Sound.

To make it resemble Hayward Field in the 1970s, Hollywood set designers worked their magic. Even those who have visited the original setting couldn’t tell the difference on film.

7. Say Anything

Cameron Crowe fans will remember his directorial debut film Say Anything from 1989. What they might not remember is that part of the movie was filmed in Tacoma.

The iconic high school romance movie starred a young John Cusack and Ione Skye. Critics and moviegoers alike love it for its realistic dialogue and believable portrayal of high school teens falling in love.

In fact, the film won the #1 spot in Entertainment Weekly’s vote for the greatest modern movie romance.

When you watch it, keep an eye out for Bob’s Java Jive as John Cusack drives his car down South Tacoma Way.

8. Three Fugitives

If you like old-school crime comedies, you’ll love this 1989 flick starring Nick Nolte, Martin Short, and James Earl Jones.

In a comedy of errors, a man just released from prison for armed robbery gets taken hostage by a bumbling bank robber. Throw in a few goofy chase scenes, an accidental shooting, and a vet who thinks he’s a dog, and you’ve got a hilarious take on an untraditional heist flick.

Tacoma filming locations include the McNeil Island Prison, Old City Hall, and the ferry dock at Steilacoom.

Iconic Movies at South Sound Cinema

So, how many of these iconic movies filmed in Tacoma have you seen?

If you missed a few, why not skip a night out and catch up on some of these classic films instead?

This college town is known for its picturesque views, strong education system, and phenomenal arts and music scene. But, one of the best reasons to live in this city? All the amazing food options you have to choose from. Which is great if you are looking for breakfast in Bellingham!

And since breakfast is the most important meal of the day, you are going to want to know about some of these hidden treasures and hot spots before you visit or move there. Scroll down to learn more about eight awesome places to eat breakfast in Bellingham.

1. Start Your Day Sunnyside Up: At the Little Cheerful Cafe

The Little Cheerful Cafe is an egg-lovers’ breakfast paradise. They have pretty much created every egg-based meal that any person can picture.

With fun combination names like the Yuppie Scram, a mix of cheddar, corn, pico, avocado, and sour cream, and the veggie-filled Kinky Linky: this Bellingham breakfast spot will satiate your need for breakfast proteins. Besides their scrambles, they also serve omelets and an Eggs Benedict that melts in your mouth.

If you are more of a carb-lover for breakfast, fear not. Little Cheerful Cafe has pancake options that parallel Yogurtology in the abundance of toppings they offer.

And what is breakfast without hash browns? Miss Little Cheerful’s hashbrowns are by themselves worth a stop in.

2. The Old Dog Who has Perfected New Tricks: Old Town Cafe

If you are in town for one of Bellingham’s notorious marathons or are just craving brunch, look no further than the Old Town Cafe. The Old Town Cafe has been a long time hot spot for locals.

And when you see their menu options, it only makes sense. It is a cornucopia for a variety of palettes. They have an array of things to choose from for vegetarians, vegans, gluten-free pancakes, and a variety of the usual breakfast suspects.

What makes Old Town Cafe a cut above the rest is their commitment to the community. They try to make all their food, including the pastries, on site. They use as many local, natural, and organic products as possible.

With serving up sides like black beans and freshly made corn tortillas for breakfast, it is a safe bet the owners are regulars at the local farmer’s market.

3. Your Breakfast BFF: Sunnyland’s HomeSkillet

The cliche goes, good things come in small packages. This saying is most certainly true of Sunnyland’s HomeSkillet.

The kitchen is only 100 square feet with one cook (Kirby White, who co-owns the restaurant with his wife, Tina). But their website says they serve about 200 meals a day, which include the 600 pounds of hand-sliced potatoes they use on a weekly basis.

The restaurant can only seat 48 people at a time in its eight table layout. In turn, it is a great place to hop in and cozy up to locals or your new neighbors.

The restaurant’s menu changes often. But some of the Sunnyland’s HomeSkillet staples you have to try are their chicken fried steak and pulled pork tater tot hash.

Come in for the coffee, and stay for the melt in your mouth french toast and comforting bites of oatmeal.

6. The Secret Gem: Skylark’s Hidden Cafe

The trek up the cobblestone path is always one worth taking. No matter what time of day you go, expect your senses to be delighted.

The breakfast at Skylark’s is always a fabulous affair. They have the usual pancake, egg, toast, french toast spread of most breakfast places. But if one dares to expand their culinary exploits, maybe try the Mediterranean frittata or locally sourced organic granola.

No matter what you decide on at Skylark’s, rest assured. You will enjoy every bite.
