Local Artisan

Now that the cold months are here and rain fills many of the days in Skagit County, it is an excellent time to find a few indoor activities to fill your time. While the mall in Skagit county may not have your favorite stores, many boutiques and family-owned shops are excellent.  Shopping in Skagit County is a fun winter activity and helps keep local businesses afloat.

During COVID we all supported local and small, and this winter, Skagit County shops need our support more than ever. From Sedro-Woolley to Anacortes, Conway to Edison, there are hidden finds everywhere. With a bit of driving around and scoping out the best spots to shop, we have put together our favorite list of shops to support local this winter.

Alpacas of South Fork Farms

Alpaca yarn

Nestled along the South Fork of the Skagit River, South Fork Farms is home to around 35 alpacas.

The farm is committed to high-quality alpaca fibers and is home to a small shop. The Bunkhouse Boutique that is located on the property sells yarn, bird nesting balls, sweaters, socks, and more. They also sell shawls and scarves, gloves, cat balls, finger puppets, and felted soaps. The shop is very small, but if you are in need of something to keep you warm this January, they definitely have something for you.

Re-Feather your Nest

Re-Feather Your Nest is both a consignment store and a boutique. Located in downtown Mt. Vernon and Anacortes, Re-Feather Your Nest is an interior decorator’s dream. With high-end used furniture and décor galore, re-feather your next has it all. From antique signs to beach house decorations, there is something for every taste and style. Much of Re-Feather’s décor is a rustic farmhouse style.

If you aren’t ready to redecorate your entire house, there are plenty of other finds to search through. From handcrafted jewelry to a small clothing section, there is something for everyone to look through. Re- Feather Your Nest is particularly popular just before the holidays because of all of the fantastic Christmas decorations. If you are shopping in January, you may be able to get a bargain on many of their Christmas décor that is left over. For each holiday, they stalk the shelves with themed décor so that your home can look great year-round.

El Sage Designs

El Sage Designs in Mt. Vernon is a small, locally-owned print shop. Using both block printing and screen printing, they create Pacific Northwest-themed clothing, art, and stickers. They have a large selection of hats, sweatshirts, t-shirts, and more, all printed in small batches. El Sage Designs advocate for social and environmental responsibility; they donate 1% of their annual earnings to organizations fighting to save the environment. On any given day when you head in, you can probably find the owners Phoebe and Jonathon working and printing new designs.

Pac Nor Westy

Pac Nor Westy is home to everything outdoors and PNW themed. They offer t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, and more that are all printed with fun outdoor imagery. Some with mountains or the ocean and others with slogans like “hike it wet” and “Camp more.” In addition to clothing, they offer field notebooks, journals, books, cards, and stationery, all outdoor and PNW themed. They also offer things such as cups, mugs, blankets, and more that are all aimed at PNW lovers.

Pac Nor Westy opened its doors in 2017 and has since been striving to become more sustainable and ethically sourced. Many of their items come from small-batch artisans, and they strive to source from the USA and the PNW whenever possible. Shopping in Skagit County is a great way to get your fix of PNW gear.

Elizabeth’s Cottage by the Sea

Elizabeth’s Cottage by the Sea, located in Anacortes, is a shop of all things. They sell Jewelry, Beads, gifts, crystals, furniture, antiques, gems, minerals, and more. The shop is a mix of a gift shop and a local boutique. They have a large section of antique and new jewelry in one area, and in another, they sell paint and transfer supplies. This multi-level shop has bins, shelves, and display cases aplenty to keep you busy for as long as you want to browse.

Alley Cat Antiques

In Conway, you will find a plethora of antique stores. Alley Cat Antiques has a large front and usually has a large selection of items from local estate sales. Alley Cat antiques have everything an antique lover could want, from quilts to typewriters and everything in between.

Pelican Bay Books and Coffee House

In Anacortes, on 9th street, Pelican Bay Books and Coffee house stands. The bookstore was first opened in 1994 in a different building, and after moving several times, it has been in its current building since 2006. This book store is unique because it is a used and rare book store. It’s owners chose Anacortes to be close to the sea and the forest and now use the space as both a book store and a small café with coffee and pastries.

Rare Books Pelican Bookstore

In Edison, Indigo Dreams Fiber sits on the main street, Nestled in between the Edison Restaurant and several other popular Edison eateries. fall outfits

The best style for fall outfits in the Pacific Northwest changes from city to city. Coming up with your own style is the way to go.

Although a popular naked bike ride brings 9,000 nude riders to Portland in the Pacific Northwest every year, you’ll need clothes for the rest of your time.

When buying fall outfits would you choose cowboy boots and bold prints or denim and chunky knits? The overall vibe for fall outfits in this area is comfy, casual yet cool.

So, where are the best places to shop when in the Pacific Northwest? There are hundreds of boutiques and thrift stores throughout the area.

In this article, we’ll look at a few places you can begin shopping to get your fall outfits down.

1. Vintage Shopping & Thrift Stores

One of the best ways to ensure you get a few pieces of clothing which are very unique is to head to thrift stores.

If you’re new to thrift store shopping, don’t be afraid. The process can take some time but you can come up with absolute treasure or just a few useful layers.

Root around, have fun and don’t forget that after you wash a few of the items you found, they’ll be as good as new.

Red Light Clothing Exchange

We’re starting off with a popular store thanks to its range of clothing and reasonable prices.

If you’re looking for warm jumpers of jackets for fall, Red Light Clothing Exchange is a great place to start. Your fall look could include just one decade’s trends or mix it up.

This store has everything from denim to leather, mohair to old band t-shirts. Better yet, by shopping vintage, you’re also doing your small bit to help save the planet.

Find this shop at 3590 SE Hawthorne Blvd, Portland, OR 97214, USA

Gold Dogs

Although small inside, Gold Dogs in Seattle packs a punch and has many great options already for your new fall look.

For your Pacific Northwest look, you’ll need some cowboy boots and this is the perfect place to pick up a vintage pair to your liking.

If your preferred look is rodeo, rock and roll biker – this is your place. As with most vintage shops, you should have some dedication while searching.

But, if you know what you’re looking for and are feeling determined, you might strike gold!

Find this shop at 5221 Ballard Ave NW, Seattle, WA 98107, USA

Savvy Plus

This shop is great for women who are sizes 12 and up and sick of high street stores which seemingly don’t offer anything above a size 6.

Unfortunately, it appears this shop is receiving bad reviews due to a change in ownership but may be worth checking out anyway.

It was known for having a beautiful collection of both old and new clothes. However, it is a little pricier than the other options.

Find this shop at 3204 SE Hawthorne Blvd, Portland, OR 97214, USA

2. Boutiques

If you’re struggling to find something which suits your style in a thrift or vintage store, head next to the boutiques.

As you’re paying a little more, you’ll be able to ask for help and won’t have to root through the hundreds of options.

Boutique Bleu

Based in Spokane, this little boutique sells classy and contemporary clothing, wallets and purses. You’ll also find cute shoes and hats.

If you’re hoping to find fall outfits which are chic and understated – this is the shop for you.

Once you’re all frocked up and feeling classy, check out the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture. You’ll fit right in.

Find this shop at MH69+PM Spokane, Washington, USA

Twill Boutique

This store is known for having useful staff on hand who can help you out when you’re struggling.

They know how to dress every body type and can offer solutions for work, nights out or a first date.

Twill Boutique offers other benefits such as the fact that the clothes are “sustainably made” and the owner is kind and friendly.

However, keep in mind the prices will be higher here.

Find this shop at 3352 SE Belmont St, Portland, OR 97214, USA

Frock Boutique

Opposite the Tin Shed Garden Cafe, this shop is the perfect place to check out while waiting for a table.

Frock Boutique is a locally owned store boasting a large array of women’s clothing for every body shape and size.

They offer unique looks and an array of interesting choices from local Portland designers.

This shop may be a little small but it offers looks which are ideal for your Portland fall collection. Expect bright colors, unusual prints, and cheeky frocks

Find this shop at 1439 NE Alberta St, Portland, OR 97211, USA

3. Get the Accessories Down

After you’re happy with your ripped denim, chunky knit pulls and one-of-a-kind dresses, you’ll need to get a few new accessories to complete the look.

Queen Bee Creations

Who doesn’t love a handmade bag and better yet, one which doesn’t exploit animals for beauty?

At Queen Bee Creations, you’ll find high-quality vegan products which can handle being used every single day.

Needless to say, the designs are extremely functional but also very fun with quirky patterns and designs.

At this boutique, you’ll be able to find: satchels, diaper bags, clutches, small purses, summer bags, wallets and other fun smaller gifts.

Find this shop at 3961 N Williams Ave #101, Portland, OR 97227, USA

Satori

At this sleek boutique, you’ll find gorgeous items of clothing. But, my personal favorite aspect of this store is browsing the accessories.

You’ll find a huge range of items to dress up your outfit, but also your home. Hats, bags, and boots are all available for you to peruse and enjoy!

Find this shop at 1734 Pacific Ave, Tacoma, WA 98402, USA

Tanner Goods Flagship Store

This type of shop is one of my favorites in town. You’ll find a random collection of goods which will keep you perusing for a long while.

Here, you can find accessories such as wallets, belts, bags, glasses cases, hats and even a wide range of shoes.

However, you’ll also be able to find something for your pet, mugs, plant pots, records, and guitar straps.

Both this space and its location are very cool and worth checking out. It certainly knows its aesthetic and just what customers love.

Find this shop at 4719 N Albina Ave, Portland, OR 97217, USA

4. Not Going Barefoot? Sort Out Your Footwear

Portland is a place which is known for its Earth-friendly, vegan eating, friendly hippies who love getting outdoors.

But, if you’re not quite at the stage of being able to go barefoot, here are a couple of places where you can find shoes which still fit in with the Portland sensibilities.

Pie Footwear

What’s more Portland than vegan footwear? The range at this shop will blow you away too. Choose from high length boots, boat shoes, trainer or sandals.

Although most of the shoes have a somewhat Portland vibe, you can pair them up with any outfit and be fall ready.

Find this shop at 2916 NE Alberta St, Portland, OR 97211, USA

re-souL

Along with the original name of this boutique, you’ll also find unique shoes. Everything from a modern style to a funky vibe is available.

Expect European designers to be showcased. Sandals, loafers, boots, and platforms are all available. Don’t expect to walk away empty-handed.

Find this shop at 5319 Ballard Ave NW, Seattle, WA 98107, USA

Imelda’s and Louie’s

If you’re looking for a shop with great customer service, a huge range of options and also a few accessories to peruse, Imelda’s and Louie’s is your best bet.

Sandals, brogues, high boots, shorter boots, a huge range of colors and shapes make this a great place to find a shoe for your fall look.

Find this shop at 3426 SE Hawthorne Blvd, Portland, OR 97214, USA

Fall Outfits Made Easy while Shopping in the Pacific Northwest

After you’ve been to all of the shops on this list, you may find that your bank account is suffering a little but your new fall collection will be ready to wear.

With a dress from Frock Boutique, a pair of shoes from Pie Footwear and a bag from Queen Bee Creations, you’ll be ready to hit the town with your new fall outfits.

Then, you’ll need to find some of the best restaurants and bars in Portland to visit. Check out our favorites.

Sharky's Ocean Shores WA

Ocean Shores is one of Washington State’s top coastal destinations. This six-mile long peninsula, sits comfortably between Grays Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. It offers expansive, drivable beaches along with a series of fresh water canals that are fun to explore by boat.

There are plenty of shops and restaurants in town and even a Beachfront Casino Hotel. The next time you’re in the area, makes sure to stop into Ocean Shores and make some memories!

Experience the Beachlife

When summer is in full swing and you just want to spend a day at the beach, Ocean Shores is a perfect destination.

Ocean Shores is a refreshing beach experience. It lacks the intense heat and humidity you would find in Southern California or Florida, and isn’t as crowded. You really get to connect with nature and take it all in.

Once again, be aware of shifting tides and keep all children close at hand. While fun and beautiful, the waters off Ocean Shores can be dangerous if not respected.

Visit a Family Fun Center

Playtime Family Fun and Pacific Paradise are two great spots to take the whole family out and do something different. These fun centers offer go-karting, mini golf, and classic arcade games.

Pacific Paradise has bumper boats available on its man-made lake and Playtime has a slick track to race cars on plus a section for virtual reality section and a classic ice-cream parlor!

Go for a Boat Ride

It’s one thing to enjoy Ocean Shores from land, and it’s a completely different experience to out on the water.

Luckily you don’t have to brave the waves of the Pacific Ocean. Ocean Shores Boat House offers a wide selection of rentable watercraft. Tour the freshwater canals of Ocean Shores in style! From a standup paddle boards, kayaks and hydro bikes to 10 passenger electric boats.

If you’re up for a bit more adventure, hop aboard vessel out of Westport, and have a coastal fishing experience

Check Out The Shops!

There is shopping available for all ages. Sharky’s is the quintessential Ocean Shores gift shop, welcoming guests with the open jaws of a giant shark! This is a great spot to pick up a souvenir and get a pic in the entrance.

If you are looking to shop and eat without going to far, check out the Galway Irish Pub and Gift shop as you come into town. This is one of our favorites spots in town, featuring a whiskey bar, cigar room and live music In October, Galway plays host to one of the largest Celtic Music Festivals on the west coast.

Ride a Horse

Have you ever imagined riding up and down the beach on horseback? Have you ever ridden a horse at all? Horseback riding on the beaches of Ocean Shores is a fun option!

These gentle creatures have a special way of connecting with their rider. Staff aim to pair riders with right horses allowing both experienced and rookie riders a pleasurable experience.

Being on horseback by the sea is unlike any other riding experience. This is your time to experience those postcards and Instagram posts you’ve seen.

Horses await you just beyond 2 access points to the shores, with the most popular being beside the Shilo Inn hotel. Drive or walk out onto the beach, and you’ll see the horses to your right, standing on the beach in a temporary corral. The cost is about $20 – $30 per hour, and you’ll ride down the beach for 30 minutes and back. All the while being kept by a watchful eye of 2 guides for your group. There is a weight limit, and you must check in at the beginning of the day because spaces get booked quickly, especially on weekends. You can’t call and make a reservation, they literally want to meet and see the physical abilities of every person who is planning to ride.

Explore Ocean City State Park

Just north of town is Ocean City State Park. This 170-acre park sits along the shore, and is a goldmine of activities for the young and old alike. Visitors are welcome for a day use or overnight camping.

It’s uniques location allows its guests access ocean beaches along with wetlands, treed hiking trails and more.

Ocean City State Park offers lake fishing and kayaking as well as snorkeling, diving, and clamming in the ocean. There is hiking along the beach and within the park, plus tons of sightseeing and prime photo-taking opportunities.

Ocean City is not too far from town, so stocking up on last minute provisions or dinner at a restaurant should not be a problem.

Take a Walk on North Jetty

North Jetty is a rocky part of the Ocean Shores beach. It’s not ideal for laying out and spending the whole day, but it’s the place to be if you want to explore tide pools and get in some awesome landscape photography.

When the water is rough the waves crash on the rocks in a beautiful dance. When the sea is calmer, it’s easier to walk from rock to rock and discover all the ocean life that sits on the shore. Either way, the experience is a real treat and well worth going a little further out on the beach.

Do use common sense however! The amazing power of the ocean is beautiful to watch, but is not to be taken lightly. Don’t get stuck as the tide comes in!

And if you’re looking for something a big calmer, check out Damon Point for sand, surfing (even in winter) and a great walk out over the dunes and down the peninsula.

Climb Washington’s Tallest Lighthouse

Across the channel from Ocean Shores and you’ll find yourself in Westport, A quaint, fishing village perched on a peninsula between Grays Harbor and the Pacific Ocean.

Westport Light State Park offers some of the same features as Ocean City park with one rather large difference. An historic lighthouse!

The Grays Harbor Lighthouse is over 100 years old and stands at 107 feet tall. It offers amazing views from top. On a clear day you can even see as far away east as Mt. Rainier in Washington’s Cascade Mountain Range.

Lighthouses are a special family-friendly experience, and are an iconic experience for folks who don’t live by the water. Every lighthouse has its own unique story worth discovering. Learn more about the lighthouse and the surrounding maritime culture at the Westport Maritime Museum

Although Westport sits just across the channel from Ocean Shores, it takes a good hour to drive there. Thankfully local leaders are banding together to bring back ferry service between the two Coastal Cities.

Check Out the Local Art

Save some time in your schedule to discover a few of the galleries around town and check out art by local Ocean Shores artists and regional favorites:

Fusions Art Gallery

The Gallery of Ocean Shores

The works include paintings, photographs, and handmade goods. Walk around for a bit of extra inspiration for your own creative interests or take a few pieces home to really enjoy them.

Discover the Best Things to Do in Ocean Shores

It’s one thing to read about the best things to do in Ocean Shores and another to see what this cute little beach town is really like.

If you’re a Washington State resident, book a staycation here the next time you want to get away. If you’re coming to Washington to explore Seattle or get lost in the mountains for a few days, squeeze Ocean Shores into your itinerary.

Artist & Craftsman Paper Selection

Artist & Craftsman Paper Selection

Opening their doors November 2016, Artist & Craftsman arrived with a reputation in the art community for quality professional art supplies. Their Seattle Location is known for it’s astounding inventory and size. However the Tacoma location has a more Historic feel. A flood of abstract rainbow colors fill the room along with decorative light features. The Artist & Craftsman team has done an amazing job of restoring the Wagner Motors Building without losing the integrity of its classic 1920’s design.

Although every artist has a speciality and Michael Rives, the Manager of Artist & Craftsman is there to help artist cultivate theirs. I spoke with Kat one of the friendly staff members as she was adjusting upcoming events on the store cork board. She explained that Artist & Craftsman is a place for artist to dive into their passions. Moreover Kat was adamant that if there was a specific tool or item an artist wanted and Artist & Craftsman didn’t carry it in store, they would be able to order it for their customers or help them find it. The friendly staff isn’t the only draw to this stellar art store. Artist & Craftsman also host events, and are beginning to organize classes for the 2017 year.

The second event this month is on Sunday February 12th at 1pm. Artist & Craftsman will be hosting Marabu and demonstrating new products. Celia Buchanan will be leading the demonstration.

There are many more events to come which are listed on the Artist & Craftsman Facebook page and website. Tacoma residents are fortunate to live in a city full of art. Pao’s Excels in its Simple Approach

I am impressed with the pricing, the simplicity and the excellence in their offerings. Eating at Pao’s has changed what I accept as a good donut. The owners have been there to serve me each time I go. They are quick let me know which donuts are fresh, and which are discounted day old donuts. I was hesitant in ordering an espresso from a donut shop, but I must say, my double tall latte was well made. Pao and his wife seem to take pride in their work, and the community has noticed . Pao’s was voted Best of the South Sound in 2016.

Family Business

The atmosphere may seem familiar to you. Pao’s is a former Dunkin Donuts. Pink donut boxes, stacked high behind the counter. Pictures of Pao’s children are on the walls, some with giant donuts. You get the feeling that Pao’s is not just a business—but a means to an end—a vision of what America can be and is.

A good shoe both separates and connects us to the ground. It protects our feet and ensures the grip we need to move toward our goals. Whether it’s to run another mile or shop another store, active footwear can be a key factor in how we enjoy the experience.

Each person has unique feet, with different widths and arches. Certain brands like Keen are better suited for a wider foot, and other brands like Brooks offer different cushioning factors. After-market insoles like Superfeet are popular, because they adapt a shoe to fit your foot—and can be transferred from shoe to shoe.

When considering how to stock your quiver of shoes, there are a number of things to keep in mind. Will there be mud, water or dust on the trail? Will my feet get sweaty? How stylish should I be today? How active might I get whether chasing a dog or standing in line? These are a few of the factors that help us decide which shoes to wear, and which shoes to buy.

We took a look at the offerings of a number brands to see what they offered in shoes for an active lifestyle. We stuck to low cut shoes that were not intended for any one sport. Hopefully this guide will aid you in making your next purchase:

qtq80-JcUrdJ

Lifestyle Shoes

Casual Shoes: A comfortable alternative to dressier shoes that, in some cases, may be worn with dressier clothes. There is a variety of colors and styles to pick from.

Pros – Comfortable, stylish, and typically less expensive.

Cons – They may lack the tread and support you need in your work or activities.

Something to consider –Always break in a pair of shoes and test them out before committing to an 8-hour shift in them. Just because your office-mate can get away with casual shoes, doesn’t mean it will work for you.

Walking Shoes: These can be great for work, your morning walk, or afternoon shopping. Their main function is support and comfort. They may not be as stylish as other shoes, but they get the job done.

Pros – Good comfort with great support.

Cons – Not what some might call “stylish.”

Something to consider – Some brands specialize in more stylish walking shoes. If comfort and support is what you’re looking for, don’t get scared off by one brand’s offerings.

qtq80-DYRs3i

Running Shoes

Running Shoes: Lightweight, purpose-built shoes for running and jogging in a straight line, not necessarily for side to side maneuvers. They are designed to have good airflow. They are not the most supportive in the arches or ankles. Waterproof versions are available, which are less breathable and stiffer.

A few of our favorites

Pros — Lightweight, comfortable and breathable. Often offered in fun colors/designs.

Cons – They wear out quickly. They may lack the support you need. The fun colors/designs might be “too” fun.

Something to consider – Running shoes range from being minimalist with very little support, to having a much better support, depending on the needs of the owner. Check with a reputable running store, like Brooks Running, to have an expert fit a shoe to your needs.

Trail Running Shoes: These are much like traditional running shoes, but are purpose-built for people who run on loose terrain. They have an aggressive tread, are lightweight and breathable. Waterproof versions are available.

Pros – Aggressive tread, light weight and breathable.

Cons – May lack support. The tread may not work so well on pavement or other smooth/hard surfaces.

Something to consider – As with traditional running shoes, the tread is soft and may wear down quickly. Some trail runners have an aggressive tread, which will also wear down quickly if worn off the trail.

qtq80-hfCPWp

Training Shoes

Cross Training Shoes: These are some of the most popular footwear for those with an active lifestyle who may only want one pair of shoes. They are typically made from a material and pattern that doesn’t show the dirt. They have great support and traction, and are relatively water resistant and in some cases are waterproof.

Pros – Long lasting build with relatively good support and traction. Not offensive in appearance especially if worn with an outdoor style. Typically built to last.

Cons – Heavier than other shoes. May not breath as well as other shoes.

Something to consider – These shoes may become so practical that they are all you ever wear. After two years, you may need an intervention from close friends who will help you throw them away. You will most likely buy the exact same style.

Aerobics Shoes: These are made for your typical Zumba, step or Kick-boxing classes. They offer good side support and cushioning.

Pros – Good support and cushioning. A good all around shoe.

Cons – No waterproof option. Won’t last as long as cross-trainers. The style may not translate well from your Zumba class to QFC.

Something to Consider – To help them stay clean and last longer, have a pair of comfortable slip on shoes that you wear to and from your aerobics class. This will allow your feet and active footwear to breath post workout, and could remedy any style concerns.
