Spokane

If you’re in Spokane and looking for a fun event for the whole family, the Spokane Indians are a great option during the summer and fall months. The Spokane Indian’s are a minor league team that offers major league fun with talented players, unique mascots, and gameday promotions that give the fans a memorable experience.

Spokane Indians Background

The Indians are a Minor League Baseball team as a member of the High-A West league and are an affiliate of the Colorado Rockies. Formerly a triple-A team, they are  now in the lower minor division, but still have plenty of talent come through the system, with recent notable players such as Chris Davis, Zack Greinke, Ian Kinsler, and Carlos Beltran.

Many Unique Mascots

The Spokane Indians are just as focussed on giving their fans an amazing experience as they are with winning baseball games. One of the ways they do this is by having one of the deepest rosters of mascots in all of sports.

The Indians currently have 4, yes 4, mascots at their games. Otto The Mascot, who is famed to be the first Spokanasaurus, Doris The Spokanasaurus, Ribby The Redband Trout, who appears in the 7th inning to rally the team and crowd, and Recycleman, who helps recycle over 17,000 pounds of paper, plastic, and aluminum each season.

Family Fun Event’s

The Spokane Indians hospitality towards their fans doesn’t just stop with silly mascots. Avista Field offers a host of promotional nights where fans can win prizes, receive free gear and memorabilia, and even win cold hard cash. They bring the show no matter what the score of the game, with special nights such as firework night, carnival night, and baseball bingo. Whether you are looking to host a business event, birthday party, or just get out of the house and enjoy the sunshine with your family, the Spokane Indians are a must see attraction in Spokane.

I-90 Bridge

The drive between Spokane and Seattle is usually just a little over 4 hours, but the drive is packed with vastly different kinds of scenery, as well as numerous worthwhile stops that will help break up your drive.

Snoqualmie Falls

With over 1.5 million tourists flocking to the area each year, Snoqualmie Falls has become one of Washington’s most popular tourist attractions. The main attraction is the 270 foot tall waterfalls that are only a 10-minute detour from the I-90 freeway. Viewers can get great views of the majestic falls from two separate observation decks, check their website before you go to make sure the observation decks are open to tourists.

There are plenty of other attractions surrounding the falls, such as a gift shop, a 2-acre park, numerous trails, and even a candy factory & cafe. If you’re looking to try your luck you can go just down the road to the very popular Snoqualmie Casino where they have 54 game tables and over 1700 slot machines.

Visit the town of Leavenworth

Leavenworth combines a fascinating history with entertainment and european flavor for a one of a kind experience in the inland northwest. An old logging town that ran into trouble in the 1930’s when the railway was rerouted out of town, town leaders of Leavenworth decided in 1960 that they needed to take action to save their beloved town from being deserted. They looked at the surrounding nature and came to the conclusion that it looked nearly identical to Bavaria, so they decided to makeover the town to fit it’s surroundings.

Since the makeover, this little town has become a top tourist destination and now attracts 1 million tourists every year. They host numerous festivals such as the Autumn Leaf Festival, Maifest, and Christmas Lighting Festivals. If you aren’t passing through during one of these festivals there is still nearly endless of unique dining, activities, and amenities that blend northwest and bavarian cultures like nowhere else in the world.

Soap Lake

Soap Lake is an unassuming but fascinating lake that is a must stop if you are into mineral baths and the healing power of nature. The lake isn’t just another body of water with some minerals in it, Soap Lake is known to have the most diverse mineral content of any body of water on earth. The lake was originally carved out from ancient floods, and after thousands of years of ground water leaching through nearby basalt cliffs, the lake is saturated with minerals such as sulfate, carbonate, bicarbonate, sodium, and chloride. The lake is known to have a pH level at or close to 10.0. Another fascinating tidbit is that the lakes water is stratified into layers that don’t mix, and have never mixed throughout its history. Locals and visitors alike have claimed for centuries that the lake leaves their skin feeling soft and smooth, as well as relieving various aches and pains throughout the body.

The Gorge Amphitheatre

When it comes to live music in the northwest United States, The Gorge Amphitheatre is difficult to top. Tucked into the banks of the Columbia River, this venue offers visitors a place to soak in some rays while listening to various genres of music. The real treat is watching the sun slowly drop down behind the stage and behind the Columbia River for one of the better sunsets you will ever see.

Hike in the Cascade Mountains

It’s hard not to be blown away by the Cascade Mountains, especially if you’re traveling west from Spokane where the landscape is relatively barren and flat. Seeing them is one thing, but hiking into the mountains is a whole nother experience. Whether you want to stop for a quick hike to stretch the legs or go on a full-day hike, there is something for everyone. You can find an extensive list of trails here, but some of our top recommendations include, Annette Lake Trail, Talapus Lake Trail, and Margaret Lake Trail.

McArthey Athletic Center

Spokane may not have a major professional sports team, but there is no shortage of things to do if you are wanting to get your sports fix, both at the amateur and semi-pro levels.

Catch a Zags Game

The Gonzaga Bulldogs (AKA The Zags) men’s basketball is one of the best underdog stories in recent history across all sports, not just college basketball. Up until the mid-90’s Gonzaga was a mediocre regional school that got little to no attention on the national stage, aside from the years when NBA Hall of Famer, John Stockton, played for them in the 80’s. Ever since that time, they have been on a tear that has been nothing but incredible to watch.

Gonzaga was put on the map by their 1998-1999 elite eight run in the NCAA tournament in only their second appearance in the tournament. Since then, they have made every single NCAA tournament with 2 appearances in the National Title Game. Leading the Bulldogs for the bulk of this incredible run is Mark Few who has won numerous coach of the year awards along the way.

What was once an average local ball club has become a national powerhouse. Last year Gonzaga was the #1 ranked team for the entire regular season, a feat that has only been accomplished 2 other times in the last 30 years. 6 players are currently playing in the NBA and likely 3 more will be coming in this year’s draft.

The point is, if you can get your hands on a ticket, the Zags mens basketball team is an absolute must for any sports fan. Not only will the game feature incredible talent, but the atmosphere at McCarthey Athletic Center is one of the most electric in the nation. If you aren’t wanting to spend the money, or simply can’t find a ticket, you can always catch the game at nearby Jack & Dan’s which is close to the university and a known gathering spot for Zags fans.

Hit The Streets At Spokane Hoopfest

Spokane Hoopfest is the largest 3-on-3 basketball tournament in the world. Every year this tournament attracts over 27,000 players and 7,000 teams to downtown Spokane, where every street is blocked off and transformed into hundreds of courts. Thousands more people come to enjoy the entertainment with attractions such as concerts, numerous food vendors, a slam dunk contest, and a half court shootoff for a Toyota Tundra.

Enjoy The Summer With A Spokane Indians Game

If you’re looking for a more family friendly sporting event, the Spokane Indians is a fun environment for kids and adults during the summer and fall seasons. The Indians are a Minor League Baseball team as a member of the High-A West league. They are a lower minor league team, but still have plenty of talent come through the system, with recent notable players such as Chris Davis, Zack Greinke, Ian Kinsler, and Carlos Beltran.

While the Spokane Indians day job is to groom MLB prospects, they give their fans a whole lot of fun and excitement while doing it. Most sports teams have 1 mascot, the Spokane Indians figured this is woefully inadequate. Along with their 4 silly and earth-conscious mascots, the Indians provide gameday promotions, give-aways, and contests for kids to make sure everyone has a memorable time at Avista Field.

Hit The Ice With The Spokane Chiefs

If you’re into hockey, or if you’ve never even been to a hockey game, the Spokane Chiefs will be sure to give you an exciting experience. The Chiefs play in the Western Hockey League and are no strangers to having talent come through their system, with 57 players making it to the NHL along with 5 coaches.

The real excitement is being in the arena, with fans cheering, skates slicing through the ice, the unmistakable horn after a goal, and of course the Zamboni between periods. They also offer plenty of promotions including trips, casino getaways, and princesses & heroes night.

Not a sports fan? Or just looking for other fun things to do in Spokane? Take a look at our other great options here.

fall outfits

The best style for fall outfits in the Pacific Northwest changes from city to city. Coming up with your own style is the way to go.

Although a popular naked bike ride brings 9,000 nude riders to Portland in the Pacific Northwest every year, you’ll need clothes for the rest of your time.

When buying fall outfits would you choose cowboy boots and bold prints or denim and chunky knits? The overall vibe for fall outfits in this area is comfy, casual yet cool.

This shop is great for women who are sizes 12 and up and sick of high street stores which seemingly don’t offer anything above a size 6.

Unfortunately, it appears this shop is receiving bad reviews due to a change in ownership but may be worth checking out anyway.

It was known for having a beautiful collection of both old and new clothes. However, it is a little pricier than the other options.

Portland is a place which is known for its Earth-friendly, vegan eating, friendly hippies who love getting outdoors.

But, if you’re not quite at the stage of being able to go barefoot, here are a couple of places where you can find shoes which still fit in with the Portland sensibilities.

Pie Footwear

What’s more Portland than vegan footwear? The range at this shop will blow you away too. Choose from high length boots, boat shoes, trainer or sandals.

fall flowers
fall flowers

Finding the best fall colors can make the shorter days colder whether more bearable. While there is some hardship with Autumn, almost a third of Americans say fall is their favorite season! Surprisingly, it also takes the crown as the most preferred season to tie-the-knot.

There are so many things to love about about fall. For starters, there’s the stunning foliage carpeting the grounds with yellows, oranges, and reds. Fun fact: much like the colors of a sunset, call colors are shown to slow a person’s time perception.

Then, there are the beautiful fall flowers.

You read that right. Spring and summer aren’t the only blooming seasons. Fall’s blossoms are as awe-inspiring as those you see during the warmer seasons.

All these and more, you can enjoy when in the Pacific Northwest.

The question is, where exactly can you find and marvel at the best fall colors?

Read this guide, and you’ll soon be on your way to one of them!

Kubota Garden, Seattle

Hills and valleys spanning 20 acres, the Kubota Garden in Seattle is a prime spot for Washington fall foliage. The beauty of this place stems from the combination of Japanese garden themes with flora of the Northwest.

Mind your jaw as you look at the beautiful water formations, including waterfalls, streams, and ponds. The huge collection of plant species here includes fall bloomers, such as Japanese maples.

University of Washington Arboretum, Seattle

Golds, oranges, and reds aren’t the only fall colors in Washington. Want some whites with your autumn foliage? Then head to the University of Washington Botanic Gardens.

Here, you’ll find the Franklin Tree’s flowers painting a stark white contrast against its gold and red leaves. The arboretum’s Dawn Redwoods also add pink to the foliage. Maples, flowering cherries, and dogwoods also line the 230-acre garden.

Seattle Japanese Garden, Washington Park Arboretum, Seattle

The Seattle Japanese Garden attracts more than 100,000 visitors every year.

So… What makes it so special you should include it in your list of Washington fall foliage viewing spots?

For starters, it’s amongst North America’s most highly-regarded gardens. Because of its Japanese influences, the garden gives you a sneak peek to the Land of the Rising Sun. There are waterfalls, forests, mountains, and rivers to curb your craving to be one with nature.

It’s also thanks to its Japanese roots, you’ll see astonishing fall foliage and flowers here. Plus, the varied ecosystem here means you’ll marvel at both flora and fauna.

Manito Park, Spokane

Boasting not one, not even three, but five showcase gardens, Manito Park affords some of the best scenes of fall in Spokane.

There’s the Nishinomiya Tsutakawa Japanese Garden, for starters. The garden, filled with maple trees and koi ponds, form a picture-perfect scene.

Before you leave to stock up on the local farms’ fresh produce, go for a stroll along the golden-leaf-covered Manito Boulevard.

Riverfront Park, Spokane

Spokane’s Riverfront Park isn’t only a great place to catch the incredible Washington fall colors. It also affords you incredible views of the magnificent Spokane Falls.

Considered one of the “most unforgettable urban falls” in the U.S., the Spokane Falls actually consist of two waterfalls. There’s the Upper Falls and the Lower Falls. Together, they make up the largest urban waterfall in the country.

A great plus to the Riverfront Park is its location. Situated downtown, you’ll have no problems finding other activities to satisfy your outdoorsy side. The SkyRide Over the Falls, Tour Train, and 1909 Looff Carrousel are to name a few.

Pro Tip: Make sure you don a good pair of shoes before heading to the park. That way, you can take on the challenge that the Centennial trail and various walking paths offer.

The Finch Arboretum, Spokane

What do you get when you mix a massive collection of plant material with 65 acres of hills?

The John A. Finch Arboretum, that’s what! Of course, there’s also the astonishing fall foliage to see.

The Finch Arboretum’s flora collection lines the Garden Springs Creek shores, the various species of which grow all year long. Chosen for their compatibility with the city’s climate, the different plant materials bloom and flourish whatever season it is. That gives you more reason to visit not only during the fall season.

Mt. Rainier National Park, Washington

Let’s face it. The best way to take in breathtaking views and landscapes is when they’re all natural.

Much thanks to Washington’s Mt. Rainier National Park, that’s exactly what you’ll get.

Almost untouched by human hands, the area surrounding the active volcano boasts ancient forests and houses various wildlife. With it being rich in flora, you can expect stunning leafage throughout the year, and not only during autumn.

During the fall season, make sure you make your way to Paradise and Reflection Lakes. These are some of the mountain’s best areas to see awesome golds, reds, oranges, and even greens. The Grove of the Patriarchs is also a must-visit.

As for wildflowers, Mt. Rainier’s collection is a sight to behold. But since they only bloom for a limited time, make sure you catch them before late fall.

Leavenworth Town, Washington

The fact that it has its own Autumn Leaf Festival should already tell you that Leavenworth Town is one of the best places to see stunning fall leaves in action. That and the town’s name itself, which is spelled almost like heaven.

Plus, it’s situated in none other than the Cascade Mountains. As such, know there’s plenty other things for you to do. Try trekking The Enchantments, conquering the Tumwater Canyon, or following the Apple Capital Loop Trail.

If you want something less laborious, find a good spot for fall foliage viewing at the Waterfront Park.

Fun Fact: Waterfront parks in general are amazing locations to observe the best fall colors. The expanse of foliage, combined with the visual break, and opportunity for reflected can provide for stunning views. Don’t forget to pick your jaw up before going home!

Fall in Love with Pacific Northwest’s Fall Flowers and Foliage

Many of the Pacific Northwest’s fall flowers provide an amazing contrast to the golden and scarlet foliage of autumn. From the Agastache Blue Fortune to the Purple Dome blossoms and the Aster x frikartii Monch to the Great Blue Lobelia, you’re in for a superb treat if you visit during the fall.

Last tip before we go: When searching for the best fall colors in the Northwest, Make sure to dress in layers. Fall, in particular, is a season when the temperature and precipitation can change from moment to moment. Oh, and don’t forget to check out our other travel posts!

Toys

Bargains await the urban miner at Spokane’s Very Own GoodWill Outlet Store. This treasure trove is located at 1406 E Front Avenue.

“GO!”

That’s the emotion felt by bargain hunters, treasure seekers and resellers alike as the new “boats” (That’s Goodwill talk for Giant Blue Carts) are rolled out. Pickers like me are looking for that next great score. Whether it be vintage clothing, collectibles or useable housewares, the diggers are ready to find some buried treasure.

I’m On A Boat

Boats rotate every 15-30 minutes, so before you think this is a a calm and orderly sifting through items, do realize this is serious shopping. It has been described to me as “throwing ‘bows,” with ‘BOWS being shorthand for ELBOWS.  Pickers frantically dig shoulder to shoulder and elbow to elbow, sifting through multiple layers of donated items.

As a frequent digger, I’ve found cash, gold and yes, even some small diamonds. Those items are  buried in the big blue “boats” far more frequently than anyone might think. For the most part, these treasures are from items that have been unsold at the regular Goodwill stores.  Items that aren’t sold from the outlet are then bundled and sold to salvage companies.

On the very special occasion the Goodwill Outlet is filled with fresh, raw donated unsifted merchandise. This occurs when there are just too many donations to sort and sell. Occasionally you find that obscure, item that makes you wonder who purchaed it in the first place.

Safety First

Wear gloves…Trust me. There are plastic gloves available for free but I prefer wearing more durable leather gloves to prevent cuts, scrapes or even worse. Check out these Leather Gloves!

Familiar Faces

If you make a habit of shopping at the Goodwill Outlet store, you’ll see a lot of familiar faces. Honestly, people watching is half the fun. Maybe it’s the lady kissing the dog in her cart or the guy with OCD that arranges all of the books in the boat.

Many of the regular folks are resellers. Others are Ebayers, or shop owners looking to stock their shelves. Some are just casual thrift store shoppers.

For me the fun is in the digging and discovery at a very low cost. You pay by weight. Up to 9 pounds at $1.69. The more you buy the cheaper it gets. if you go over 25 pounds you pay just .89 cents per pound. Trust me, it’s not hard to reach the 25 pound mark.

Clothing and Housewares

Eric Thompson - Goodwill picker

Eric Thompson – Goodwill picker

The Goodwill Outlet is much like a warehouse. It is separated into two sections. One is filled with rows of clothing and the other is filled with housewares.

On the clothing side, vintage clothing is mixed in with brand name items and yes, even your everyday nasty, gross donated item. It’s up to you to determine the legitimacy of the slick Coach trench coat but pickers have found the real deal and have made a career of doing so on a regular basis.

On the housewares side is where I do my business. I look for collectibles to resell on eBay (For the love of all that is holy, please check eBay for the seller comicgeek12). My house looks like an episode of hoarders and my garage hasn’t housed a car in 4 years.

In housewares you can find electronics, collectables and just about anything you can imagine that someone might donate to the Goodwill. People think I spend a fortune on toys for my kid. What they don’t realize is that for just 89 cents any digger can be a hero. It isn’t all glorious however. My daughter once asked if she could ever get any new toys. NOPE! The hottest new toys will be at the Goodwill in 6 months. Patience is a wonderful quality for any child to develop.

A Win Win Situation

Beware, shopping here can be extremely habit forming. If somebody is ever looking for me during my free time, they will most likely find me scouring for treasures.  Ultimately, it’s fun. You can find some really great treasures and even make some money if you are so inclined.

An added benefit to shopping at Goodwill, is that you are supporting local jobs social assistance programs with your purchase.

Either way, it’s an adventure. And trust me, wear gloves.

Chaps also offer a large outdoor patio to soak up the morning sunshine while enjoying popular dishes such as maples scones and blueberry french toast.

The hands-on owners are the secret to the success and buzz of Chaps, making you real right at home!

2. Ruins

The perfect spot for a midday treat, Ruins is a gourmet sandwich bar of sorts, offering over 10 different sandwich options. The menu also includes a selection of kimchi and other spicy dishes, but what you really should go for is a freshly made sandwich.

Averaging around $8 per sandwich, portions are hearty and generous.

3. Downriver Grill

No list of best restaurants in Spokane is complete without Downriver Grill.

Nestled in the neighborhood of South Hill, The Scoop has been serving its delicious ice-cream here for over a decade.

Try their Berries and Biscoff Belgian waffle, made with berries, Biscoff cookie butter and whipped cream- pure heaven for those with a sweet tooth.

5. Zona Blanca

For something a little left of center, Zona Blanca is a good place to head.

It’s known as one of the best restaurants in Spokane for this very reason – they dare to be different. Zona Blanca is the brainchild of Chef Chad White and is essentially a ceviche bar which was opened in 2016.

Chad believes in using fresh, local ingredients in order to emphasize sustainability in all Zona Blanca’s dishes.

Ceviche is a method which is all about preservation and is a very basic way of preparing fish and other seafood.

Essentially, Zona Blanca offers very simple food, prepared in a manner that screams fine dining.

If you are seafood fan, Zona Blanca is a taste sensation. Dishes worth sampling include the Baja ceviche and Jalisco – a take on ‘surf and turf’ ceviche.

One of the best things to do in Spokane is discovering spots that only locals seem to know and love. If ever there was such a spot it’s the Garland Theater, with it’s vintage vibe, second run movies and a bar that is steps from the concessions. But before we take a deeper look at the Garland, let’s look at a couple of other local treats.

Hidden Tricks of Spokane

Every community has their hidden tricks and gems. One of my favorites is the “secret dessert” at the Onion downtown.  The hot fudge dipping sauce takes this delight over the top (Pssst… ask your server about the deep fried Oreos. They are a culinary treat)

Another local trick is that farthest Eastern window at Dicks Hamburgers is where you will find the fastest line.

If I mention more, I risk being run out of town.  However, there is one piece of information that I can share without relocating my family. It is the Garland Theater and it’s a local treasure.

The Garland Theater.

The Garland theater is a historic 40’s era single screen movie house located in central Spokane.  The theater is a bookend to the historic and revamped Garland District.  The theater show second run films but offers a top tier experience.  They even have special event movies.

For me, seeing a film at the Garland is by far a more enjoyable experience than catching a flick at a modern theater.  Sure the seats might recline at the Regal Theater at Northtown Mall,  but the experience of taking my family to see the not so latest releases is probably akin to the experience my parents and grandparents had when they watched Dick Van Dyke dance across the screen.

How about another throwback,  the price of the ticket.  At just $5 a head I can afford to take my family to a movie.  Heck, even the concessions are reasonably priced.  For $17 you get a large refillable popcorn popcorn, candy and a large soda.  For just $70, you can by an annual pass.  With prices like that, I don’t need to sell my organs for the family to see all the new Star Wars movies.

A Beer & A Movie

Before Samuel L. Jackson was swinging light sabers or saving passengers from all those snakes on that Mother F plane.  I remember him having a conversation with John Travolta about having a glass of beer in the theater (Pulp Fiction anyone?).  That blew my 18 year old mind.  Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought that one day I would drink a beer in a theater while watching Thor clash with the forces of evil.

I’ve found that the beer in the theatre thing comes in handy when fulfilling parental duties by watching Pixar’s second latest film. Is it just me, or is alcohol sometimes the only way to get through kid-flicks?  FYI, I don’t think there is enough beer to get me through Paddington 2.  Just sayin’ (Opinions are not necessarily those of Clever Neighbor).

The Bon Bon Bar

Just of the The Garland Theater’s concession area is the Bon Bon. It’s a great little bar.  They have specialty cocktails and the traditional trivia & Bingo nights.  Don’t assume it’s just another bar though.  It may be small, but it has a cool retro vibe.  Wether you want a pre-show cocktail or a chills spot to enjoy, it gets two thumbs up from me.  Super huge bonus, you can take your drink to the movie.

Host A Private Screening

In case you didn’t know, Spokane has been the setting for a number of films over the years, thank in no small part to North By Northwest which is located close to Downtown Spokane. Let’s say you just inherited a good sum of money and have always dreamed of producing a film starring your best friend and your dog. The Garland Theater is available for rent! They are glad to host a screening party for your film before it’s sent off to Cannes or Sundance.

Beyond screenings, they host corporate events, team building exercises, Holiday parties and more. Click here to learn more.

A Spokane Experience

Before you head to the show, recognize that this is a unique experience.  I grew up going to a second run theater in my hometown Oxnard, (which is almost as nice as it sounds).  Anyway, I don’t know how shaving 8 bucks off of a ticket changes the dynamics of the audience but it really does.  You’ll see folks talking to each other up and down the aisles. If you go to a matinee you might even get a 1 year old serenading you for an hour and a half.  That being said, it’s kind of awesome. The Garland Theater provides a sense of community that you don’t get at a modern theater.

The Garland Theater is not simply a movie experience, it’s a Spokane experience.  Folks from all over the community come to meet up and enjoy a films and maybe a beverage or two. It’s a safe place to visit with your neighbors. It’s fun. Folks are there to have a good time. The minor distractions are more humorous than annoying.

All in all, this gem isn’t known too well or widely by outsiders, but to us locals it’s a treasure. So if you are looking for some things to do in Spokane this week or weekend, check out the Garland. It is a treat!

Parting Shots

If I had one complaint, the lights come on after the film a little too quickly.  Weird?  Not really. If I had a wish I’d ask Pixar to make a movie that doesn’t make me cry.
