file_002Ananda is Sanskrit for bliss, which is exactly what students find at Source Yoga. Located on North 21st Street in Tacoma or Regents Blvd in University Place, this local yoga studio has amazing instructors that help students at every level develop and harness their abilities. I began my Yoga expedition this past September. Coming in with zero experience, I was nervous about trying yoga. I decided to start with the I & II level class. One hour and fifteen minutes later my Yoga Bhakti (path of devotion) was under way.

Let’s talk benefits! Everyone knows that yoga helps to increase flexibility, energy and vitality. Moreover, when paired with healthy eating leads to weight reduction and increased self esteem. Yet, improved athletic performance isn’t the only benefit. With a monthly membership at Source Yoga students are able to utilize mats, bolsters, blocks, and straps to assist in their practice. You never need to worry about forgetting your mat again.source-yoga-5

All the instructors at Source Yoga are extremely knowledgeable. They are continually developing their skills by attending seminars and workshops. Students also have access to with their membership or can purchase these exploits individually.

What to expect! Class starts with seated dhyana or meditation and Instructors help students mentally focus through breathing exercises. I have tried a couple other Yoga studios in Tacoma. One of the many reasons I keep coming back to Source Yoga is the instructors. They walk students through the poses by performing them during class. They also assist students by helping to adjust their poses to develop proper movement. file_000-2

Game Day Doughnuts

Seahawks fans should be pleased by their options at Legendary Doughnuts. There is the Sherman, which is a raised ring doughnut topped with vanilla frosting and sprinkles of gresen and blue. The Wilson is very similar, but instead of sprinkles; it has sparkly blue and green sugar crystals. On Blue Friday and Game Day these doughnuts are in the shape of a football. Both of these doughnuts are in the “famous” class, alongside the Homer Simpson, Tinkerbell and Sex In The City doughnuts.

One step above the “famous” class is the “legendary” class, where sits a vanilla cake doughnut donning a blanket of vanilla-frosting and two blue and green chunks of bubble gum. If you haven’t yet guessed, this is known as the Pete Carroll (Learn why Seahawks Coach Pete Carroll is known for chewing gum)

Local Origins

Legendary Doughnuts opened in 2010 featuring their own cold press coffee and a bacon encrusted maple bar known as the Oprah (check out this recipe from Oprah.com). They became a hit in the South Sound and have since opened a number of new locations, to the delight of many a work place (click here to order a dozen doughnuts).

Doggy Doughnuts

Your pooch will be happy to join you. The “Fido Nuts” and “Pup Cannoli” look delicious. Thankfully there are other options to avert temptation, like the “doughsant” class of doughnuts–a ring of croissant dough, featuring a variety of topping options. For those counting calories Legendary Doughnuts offer smaller variations on many of their doughnuts. There are doughnut cakes and towers for those who are not.

It would seem that Puyallup has a hidden gem of a restaurant in Ben Herreid’s Arista. A restaurant so intriguing, that restaurant owners rallied around it this week to say, “You will not close!”

Arista offers fresh pasta that is made in-house, and is a proponent of a “farm-to-table” approach. One such dish is their Pumpkin Ravioli, featuring locally sourced pumpkins and foraged Chanterelle mushrooms. They have a diverse selection of wine, including a chianti by the glass, and feature dessert from local bakeries.

Arista has 4.5 stars on Yelp, with gushing reviews. If you are looking for a spot to relax and a be served with food from the heart of a passionate, friendly chef, then find yourself in Arista in the near future, and let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Arista offers a Farm to Table approach and diverse selection of wine.

“The amazing community of Puyallup has reached out! In short we made a decision off of what appeared to be an amazing opportunity to open Roast House in Parkland which has brought on a huge financial burden due to an unforeseen situation. Due to that situation we made a premature emotional decision to close however we apologize for the premature decision to close today. I am passionate about my restaurant. This is my love. We ask you for your support as we open tomorrow and purely focus on doing what Puyallup has proven to us that they love and appreciate in Arista. We ask for your support…we will be open for dinner tomorrow. Please come support us tomorrow!!”

Something To Consider:

Just across Pioneer Avenue is Anthem Coffee, where you can enjoy an espresso, beer or wine, before or after your meal.

Maybe take a walk through Pioneer Park, or peruse the books at the Puyallup Public Library before your meal.

Lucky Dog Treat

Lucky Dog Outfitters is the perfect all in one pet shop. Located on 6th Avenue in Tacoma, these dog loving South Sounders have what every pet wants and all pet owners need. After performing tricks Gizmo the Great was given the high quality treats and lots of praise. We went in for a doggie pick-up bags and left feeling informed about my product, with a few new products in mind.

Earth Rated doggie bags are greener than green. The packaging is made from recycled material, the bags are 100% biodegradable made from corn (a great renewable resource). Furthermore, the excess

processing material is then recycled for further use! It gets better, if the Quality Control Specialist at Earth Rated doesn’t find a our pups bags to meet their high standards, the bag is donated to animal shelters. Finally a company that’s green and focuses on the pets that haven’t made it home yet.

Drum roll for product details please! The refillable bag container attaches to your leash two ways. The first is by a clip that keeps the container from swinging around on the leash. The second is by a velcro strap that can be adjusted to the handle of the leash. Any awesome pet owner can simply snag a bag when the time is right. The bags come in various sizes to accommodate the smallest and largest furry friends. The container is a twist off for easy refilling.

Most important, the prices are competitive! I paid the same in store as listed online, making this local pet store a one-stop shop for our fur baby needs. The set I purchased came with 25 bags and the container for just under six dollars.

Lucky Dog Outfitters is truly one of the best local pet shops in Tacoma. They carry seasonal products as well as traditional pet gear. The staff is friendly and very knowledgeable ensuring that our most loyal companions are happy, healthy, and prepared for the the winter weather.

Dolce Si Bakery Cakes

The Legend of the Great Italian Tacoma Bakery Exists.  And it’s called Dolce Si.

“Cake… nah, I will pass.”  This is my normal response to most cakes. I’m just not a cake person, or so I’ve told myself. Well back the train up! OMG, did we ever stumble across a Tacoma bakery worth writing about. Not since I was in Europe have I experienced a cake quite like this.

“Where?” you say.

Tacoma’s own, Dolce Sí Sicilian Bakery and Cafe. This little Tacoma Bakery is located at Point Ruston (if you’ve not heard of Point Ruston, you have to visit this page) Dolce Sí is out of control good. It feels like you’re walking into a real Sicilian bakery. The colors, the smells, the food. Wow!

Yep, and it’s in Tacoma…. Oh Tacoma, I am so proud of you. Growing up to be such a wonderful little city (tear being shed).

Add this to the list of things to do in Tacoma!

Old Fashioned Burger Joint With A 21st Century

When my wife was pregnant with our first born, she craved potatoes; mainly in the form of Pick-Quick french-fries. Many drives were made past the conventional fast food restaurants in favor of the fresh offerings and light atmosphere you can find at Pick-Quick — a 21st Century Burger Joint in Auburn, Washington.

Pick-Quick offers french-fries, burgers, hot-dogs and milkshakes — along with an assortment of self-serve sodas. One embellishment that I am fond of is the inclusion of Green River Soda, undoubtedly hearkening to Auburn’s nearby Green River Valley.

A great gift for you or a friend this season could be an Assorted Selection of Sodas.

Two South-Sound Locations

Pick Quick has two locations in the South Sound. Their first is a walk up window in Fife. Their second location, in Auburn, could be described as a 21st century adaptation of a mid-20th century burger joint. Many of the decisions made in design and construction are environmentally friendly. Pick-Quick does not hide this fact, scattering their restaurant with signs explaining their eco-conscious decisions. One such design choice is their use of chairs made from 111 Coca Cola Bottles (purchase your own here). The eco-friendly design extends to the parking lot with pervious concrete and parking spots for low-emission vehicles.

The Fife location opened in 1949. The Auburn location opened in 2011. Their third location opened in Seattle’s SODO district in the fall of 2016.

Creating Memories

I recently made a trip to Pick-Quick’s Auburn location with my son. As you may know, he’s been eating there since before he was born. We shared a chocolate milkshake and an order of fries. He wanted a little more so I got him a hamburger. Perched on well intact bar stools, watching the short order cooks at work, lit by a partly cloudy sky, eating freshly made food, enjoying a weekend afternoon. Something simple. Something to be thankful for.

A good shoe both separates and connects us to the ground. It protects our feet and ensures the grip we need to move toward our goals. Whether it’s to run another mile or shop another store, active footwear can be a key factor in how we enjoy the experience.

Each person has unique feet, with different widths and arches. Certain brands like Keen are better suited for a wider foot, and other brands like Brooks offer different cushioning factors. After-market insoles like Superfeet are popular, because they adapt a shoe to fit your foot—and can be transferred from shoe to shoe.

When considering how to stock your quiver of shoes, there are a number of things to keep in mind. Will there be mud, water or dust on the trail? Will my feet get sweaty? How stylish should I be today? How active might I get whether chasing a dog or standing in line? These are a few of the factors that help us decide which shoes to wear, and which shoes to buy.

We took a look at the offerings of a number brands to see what they offered in shoes for an active lifestyle. We stuck to low cut shoes that were not intended for any one sport. Hopefully this guide will aid you in making your next purchase:

Lifestyle Shoes

Casual Shoes: A comfortable alternative to dressier shoes that, in some cases, may be worn with dressier clothes. There is a variety of colors and styles to pick from.

Pros – Comfortable, stylish, and typically less expensive.

Cons – They may lack the tread and support you need in your work or activities.

Something to consider –Always break in a pair of shoes and test them out before committing to an 8-hour shift in them. Just because your office-mate can get away with casual shoes, doesn’t mean it will work for you.

Walking Shoes: These can be great for work, your morning walk, or afternoon shopping. Their main function is support and comfort. They may not be as stylish as other shoes, but they get the job done.

Pros – Good comfort with great support.

Cons – Not what some might call “stylish.”

Something to consider – Some brands specialize in more stylish walking shoes. If comfort and support is what you’re looking for, don’t get scared off by one brand’s offerings.

qtq80-DYRs3i

Running Shoes

Running Shoes: Lightweight, purpose-built shoes for running and jogging in a straight line, not necessarily for side to side maneuvers. They are designed to have good airflow. They are not the most supportive in the arches or ankles. Waterproof versions are available, which are less breathable and stiffer.

A few of our favorites

Pros — Lightweight, comfortable and breathable. Often offered in fun colors/designs.

Cons – They wear out quickly. They may lack the support you need. The fun colors/designs might be “too” fun.

Something to consider – Running shoes range from being minimalist with very little support, to having a much better support, depending on the needs of the owner. Check with a reputable running store, like Brooks Running, to have an expert fit a shoe to your needs.

Trail Running Shoes: These are much like traditional running shoes, but are purpose-built for people who run on loose terrain. They have an aggressive tread, are lightweight and breathable. Waterproof versions are available.

Pros – Aggressive tread, light weight and breathable.

Cons – May lack support. The tread may not work so well on pavement or other smooth/hard surfaces.

Something to consider – As with traditional running shoes, the tread is soft and may wear down quickly. Some trail runners have an aggressive tread, which will also wear down quickly if worn off the trail.

qtq80-hfCPWp

Training Shoes

Cross Training Shoes: These are some of the most popular footwear for those with an active lifestyle who may only want one pair of shoes. They are typically made from a material and pattern that doesn’t show the dirt. They have great support and traction, and are relatively water resistant and in some cases are waterproof.

Pros – Long lasting build with relatively good support and traction. Not offensive in appearance especially if worn with an outdoor style. Typically built to last.

Cons – Heavier than other shoes. May not breath as well as other shoes.

Something to consider – These shoes may become so practical that they are all you ever wear. After two years, you may need an intervention from close friends who will help you throw them away. You will most likely buy the exact same style.

Aerobics Shoes: These are made for your typical Zumba, step or Kick-boxing classes. They offer good side support and cushioning.

Pros – Good support and cushioning. A good all around shoe.

Cons – No waterproof option. Won’t last as long as cross-trainers. The style may not translate well from your Zumba class to QFC.

Something to Consider – To help them stay clean and last longer, have a pair of comfortable slip on shoes that you wear to and from your aerobics class. This will allow your feet and active footwear to breath post workout, and could remedy any style concerns.

LED Lights

When given the choice, do you purchase that $20 pair sneakers that you’ll most likely replace in a few months, or are you willing to shell out $120 to ensure you have a well supporting shoe that’ll last you much longer?

qtq80-DMiIrzWhen lighting our homes, we are left with a similar decision. Are we going to choose an inexpensive incandescent bulb, or will we spend more money up front on an LED (Light-Emitting Diode) or CFL (Compact Fluorescent Light) bulb to possibly save money in the long run?

While CFL bulbs, were all the rage in the 2000’s, LED is making a charge into the 2020’s. Both bulbs use less energy than the traditional incandescent bulb, but there are some considerable advantages that LEDs have over CFLs such as heat, toxicity, function and durability. Here are some of the benefits to using LEDs.

Heat and UV:

Having relatively no heat or UV output make LED lights great for illuminating products or artifacts that are susceptible to damage like food, wine or artwork. LED bulbs are great for lamps that you would want to be cool to the touch, for whatever reason.

Long Lifespan:

When compared to incandescent and CFL bulbs, LEDs last longer and are less prone to breakage. While more expensive initially, it is their long lifespan combined with their low energy consumption that can make them an economically wise choice.

Ecology:

LED bulbs are recyclable, use less energy and have a longer lifespan than traditional lighting. While safer to throw into a landfill, incandescent bulbs do consume more energy over time. CFLs on the other hand contain mercury, meaning that they are not recyclable and should be handled as hazardous waste when discarded.

Quick On/Off:

Whereas CFLs take a while to warm up when turned on, LED lights are immediately bright. LEDs are also unaffected by extreme temperatures, making them ideal for use in outdoor lighting and refrigerated conditions.

qtq80-sxwMRo

Adaptable:

Their small size and long life make LED lights great for out of the way fixtures that are hard to reach, or you don’t want to worry about changing every year. Low temperature strip lighting is available that can be placed above or below cabinets, moldings and furniture to create a certain aesthetic appeal. You should always follow safety guidelines when using any kind of lighting fixture.

Durable:

Unlike their glass-laden cousins, LEDs can take punch and still light a room. This makes them suitable for use in situations where there may be extreme temperatures, movement and or shock.

qtq80-cgjkcs

Low Voltage:

LED lights are ideal for outdoor lighting, battery operation and use with alternative energy sources like solar and wind. They are being used more and more in mobile applications like cars, planes and boats. Smaller battery powered devices like flashlights; bike lights and camp lanterns are also great applications for LED lighting and can be found most anywhere these days.

Aesthetics:

LED lights can be configured into many different colors. Some fixtures are even able to transition between colors. By design LED lights are directional, making them ideal for applications like recessed lighting and under cabinets. There are LED bulbs available that have been designed to cast light in all directions, making them suitable for more traditional fixtures like table lamps.

qtq80-68D4t0

According to Energy.gov LED bulbs use 75-80% less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs and last up to 25 times as long. This is something to consider when changing bulbs in that ceiling fan or stairway chandelier.

15 Actionable Ways to Save Energy At School

There are many ways you can save energy and become more sustainable at home. Switching out standard CFL bulbs for LEDs should be top of your list but there are other ways to save energy at home. Many of these mirrors the ways you can save energy at school.
